Had it in the past with an old lens, now getting it about 60+% of the time.

EOS 350D body, Canon EF lenses.

When you fire the shutter release it sounds like the shutter doesnt fully open and close and you get a soft sound instead of a "kerlut"

Then Err99 in the screen and on/off required.

Have tried a couple of various forum solutions: fresh battery, rubber to the lens contacts, changed the lens. Happens in all modes too.

Any ideas before I reluctantly take it down the LCS?

It's a tricky one: www.lensrentals.com/blog/2008/12/canons-error-99-the-man-the-myth

Formatting the card (from the camera menu) is usually my first step

Error 99 is a general error if I remember right. I.e. unknown...

I have a 350d that does it when the flash doesn't pop up properly.

Try cleaning the contacts on the lens ring and the camera body - it's sometimes the case that the two aren't talking to each other if they're a bit minging.

EDIT: Sorry, just read the OP properly. In that case, as above, fresh card and format in camera? You do format your cards in the camera yes?

cheers deft, working through the article. Telling.

This seems relevant, as mine is a 300D (sorry typo above) which is similar to the Rebel I think? And Im using the 2.8 20-35mm ATM

Several lenses with newer IS, including the 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS (2005), EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS (2006), and 70-200mm f/4L IS (2006) became very popular with photographers shooting EF-S mount cameras. We know that malfunctions in some of these lenses, most commonly reported with the 17-55 f/2.8 IS, cause Err99 (and not Err01) on EF-S mount cameras. Cleaning the electronic contacts on the camera and lens will often fix, or at least improve the problem. There are a few reports that the problem is more common with original Digital Rebel

Same thing.

"Rebel" is equivalent to "EOS". The "original Rebel" was the EOS 300D.

Good stuff 🙂 I now make it a habit to format my cards pretty regularly in the camera itself (and carry a spare!)
