Following on from the awesome walks thread, I'm looking for ideas for first wild canoe / camp / climb adventure with MiniFrank.

Idea is to drive friday afternoon, park up somewhere safe, canoe for a few hours, wild/semi wild camp, walk a decent hill, camp again then canoe out. MiniFrank isn't so mini, aged 12 and fitter than me. She paddles well and climbs hills happily, I've just not strung the two together before into an adventure.

I'm in the Borders and looking for ideas within a 2-3 hours drive.

Looking forward to hearing from Mattoutandabout! Cheers.

Loch Voil could work - launch at Balqhidder bridge and canoe up to the narrows. There is a bunkhouse or speak to the bunkhouse about a camp, that said I think there are a couple of rough but useable spots along Loch Doine south bank. You face Stob Binnien and Ben More to the north for a really tough day out, or walk to Inverlochlarig and then to Beinn a c'hroin (although I have not approached from that side).

Loch Tay - there is a good paddle (Wind allowing) from Killin to Lawers area with the most ace campsites at either Tombreck Burn (huge waterfall and a mown campsite with your own sandy beach!) or further along at Old Lawers Village. From either (easier from Old Lawers Village) to wander into the Lawers massif using the old hydro tracks. Paddle out to either Kenmore and hitch/bus back, or up to Killin again if the wind allows. A big, empty loch so stay close to shore if you are not sure.

Loch Rannoch has all sorts, camping on south shore is easy and a couple of little visited hills through the Blackwoods of Rannoch - there is a semi-wild forestry commission campsite at Carie with long-drop loo's. Lovely walk up to the pass of Larig Ghallabhaich and then onto Meal Ghlas or Meal a Muic - both a couple of km heather bash in a deserted part of the world.

Further away - Loch Etive can offer an ace ride up on the tide from Bonawe and there is Cadderlie Bothy and then a good few hills in the Ben Starav area. I have not done that - but know a couple of folk who have. It is on my 'to do' list as a trip.

Sir may wish to look at renting packrafts.
Could open up more end to end options.

There is a lot more further North by the way, they are just some closer to you.
