Afternoon. ..
I've decided to ditch the idea of a compact system camera I favour of a high end compact camera. Having looked at several the one that feels the best is the g1x... anyone got one and if so how are you getting on with it?

Cheers

If it feels the best to use then it is the right one for you. All the cameras of that class and price are so similar in performance its down to the photographer to make a difference and you can only do that if you enjoy using it.

Out of interest what other cameras have you tried?

Cheers

compact camera? they are a bit chunky and they are a bit slugish so may not be great for action shots. think mirrorless camera would probably out perform it in most situations.
but if i were getting a compact quality camera it might be the sony rx100

If you don't want a zoom lens it opens up the possibility of the new Ricoh GR Digital - mmmmm

Ive looked at the fujifilm x20, panasonic gx6 (?) And one of the sonys cant remember which one... my main problem is that I am Dyspraxic and one of the side effects is that my hand permanently shake so a view finder is fairly high on my list of priorities

Have a look at the Fuji compacts. MrsZ has the X-10 that's a very decent camera, even compared to my 5D MkII

Not recommending the site at all but have you looked at the Nikon P7100:

Linky - has a view finder.

Very similar to the G series but you may (or may not) prefer the handling.

As per dobo - what makes you want to ditch the compact camera system? It may be that there are other solutions to whatever the issue is.

tbf i think the main problem is that the lenses are about the same price as the base unit and im not sure if i want the hassle of carrying them, and would i become one of the many users who fit the factory lense and not move on from there.
otoh i want some controll over the functionality of the thing so that its a few pegs above the standard point and click, which is covered by my phone.
i also dont really like the feel of the bridge style cameras.

Fair comment. The requirement for a viewfinder is the limiting factor here really.

The Canon G16 is out shortly also. Smaller sensor than the G1 X but appears to be higher spec otherwise.

What sort of photography are you mainly in to as a compact camera has certain limitations that mean they do not lend themselves so well to a couple of areas.

Also - is a zoom lens a prerequisite requirement?

i want to use it for the mtb, wildlife whilst im fishing/dog walking/ hill walking and general use. so a fairly good zoom would be good, as would a good macro as i like close up shots of bugs and stuff especially if i can train myself to get it how i see things (i guess thats the main trick)and fairly tough would also be an assett. moon on stick maybe but i reckon its out there
next year will be waterproof cameras for kayak fishing but thats another story!!! 😀

Canon's G15 is also worth a look - and because of the soon-to-be-available G16 the old (but broadly the same) G15 should be available for a good price. You can also get proper waterproof housings for the G series of Canon cameras.

yeah i know about the waterproof cases however the possibility of it becoming the property of davy jones is higher when kayak fishing than if you were diving... 120 quid potential loss as opposed to 400 plus case....

I've had a G11 for about 3 years and can honestly say, it's the best all round camera I have ever had. Pictures are very good, they are pretty robust and have enough control to allow the creative side out. Downsides are the menu button is easy to actuate accidentally with the base of the thumb. Not that great for action shots but for all else, brilliant. The G1x has a much larger sensor, therefore image quality is improved, however, the zoom is shorter and the whole camera is bigger.

G1x is great. The G15/G16 & Nikon P7000/P71000 cameras have much smaller sensors which is very noticeable in your final pictures.
The big drawbacks of the G1X are speed and macro. It has very poor close focus ability whereas all the other above mentioned will focus incredible close.

G1X is perfect is you really like to fiddle with settings and don't need to shoot too many moving subjects or macro images.
It's also old now and will probably be replaced by something else soon. If you can live with the drawbacks and can find a cheap one, it has no real competition IMHO.

Having looked at the reviews of both the g1x and the g15 I reckon that it's the g15 that'll be best.... quicker focus and longer zoom and better macro. But in the end it'll probably come down to how they feel in the hand.... and learn to live/plan better for the minimal draw backs....
