Yesterday afternoon we took the children on a canal trip from Little Venice to Camden I hadn't been on barge for the best part of 30yrs, it was so relaxed and was such a great way to see London and a different part of my city, some of the properties on the way are truly amazing.
Boys loved it to (3.5yrs & 5.5yrs)
A canal holiday ? No the boss has said when the youngest is a little older.
Lets hear you canal stories...
(first person to change canal to (c)anal is a looser !)
last year i hired a narrowboat and took a trip along the llangollen canal into shropshire. crossing the pontcysyllte aqueduct was my intrroduction to driving a narrowboat (search on youtube for it). most nights we tied up alongside a pub, ate, drank then back onto the boat for the night. days wee spent chugging along at about 3 or 4 mph, stopping to check out any villages we came across - ellesmere is lovely.
it doesn't sound like much, but it was just absolutely brilliant
At the beginning of October last year we spent a week. It was so relaxing, we have never drunk so much tea and eaten so much cake in a week. We also took 2 mini kegs of beer as there were not too many pubs where we stopped. Due to the short daylight hours we did an out and back from Norbury Wharf to Chester. There were just the two of us so when we had a staircase or a lot of locks close together it was quite tiring. We saw a lot of wildlife - kingfishers, storks, ducks incl mandarin. I would recommend if you get a boat, go for at least 2 berths bigger than you need to give you the extra room. Also the swaying sensation stops after 2 days! It was such a relaxing holiday and being out in the open all day long was fantastic. We had good weather which I think helps a lot.
