Or would it kill it to death?

There are no lubricants in heating kerosene, so the moving parts of your genny will not appreciate it at all.

I thought diesel was the lubricant? There's 2 grades of heating oil IIRC 28 and 35, 28 is similar to low temp diesel, 35 is much more thicker.
Probably depends on the generator, an old mechanical fuel pump would probably cope, modern common rail ones, or anything with cat's and DPF's I'd be worried about.
Bah! There goes emergency energy plan A. This'll be 35.
itll run - but not for very long.
if its an old genny some kero and 2 stroke as per old diesel engines would run nicely.
why you wouldnt get a red diesel delivery though ?
We ordered from a local company last night for heating oil and they delivered today....
Kerosene with 2% two stroke oil is a good replacement for diesel when needed.
35SO is red diesel (or just normal diesel with a red marker in it, caveat normally), however it is unlikely you actually have this you probably have typical Kerosene, which will be less calory dense and with a lower density (~0.780 vs 0.830) It will also have a much lower viscosity maybe 1.4 vs 2.8cst for diesel.
Viscosity and lubricity are you issues. Lubricity is easy to deal with, a small amount of veg oil properly homogenised will do the trick – I’m talking 0.002%. Viscosity is more of an issue, you cannot thicken a hydrocarob up without diluting it. Low viscosity will lead to cavitation of fuel pumps, poor fuel delivery and atomisation. that said if it’s an old genny it will barely notice it and as a backup i.e. zombie apocalypse i wouldn’t worry.
edited for pisspoor spelling
So get an old Genny and a Gert big bottle of 2 stroke, eh? Can't get a diesel delivery as I've got nowt to put it in, just the heating oil tank.
I've been doing some work for a a chap who runs a repair workshop/garage. He'd been fixing a high end car where the owner had tried kerosene to save money. The entire fuel supply system was crocked. Repair bill of £7k 😰 😳
Something like a Lister CS might be alright, heard of people running them on discarded chip oil, Lister manual suggests 1/4 pint of oil per gallon of 28sec heating oil. Don't know if I would want to try it on anything too modern.

yes but thats people not understanding technology changes.
id run it in my 200tdi although touch and go and not a long term solution.
id not even try it in my CR engine
and the old 19j(it was already for the knackers at the time) i had in the landy didnt bat an eye lid when i was using it on the farm and had the reminants of a kero tank to dispose of.
My back up plan is to run my radio off 12v using the solar on the van and tune in the world service ..... as lets face it if it comes to the point where I'm needing generators then the worlds ****ed.

bonkers. Injectors, pumps and entire fuel lines are tested to a no harms standard, but they are for short term operation only and generally for counties where fuel quality is a bit "iffy". Its the same for 100% biodiesels (FAME), and mixes thereof. Not all cars in all coutrnies share the same fuelling equipment.
Right, sounds like we've got us a plan, boys. Now, recommend me an old knocker of a generator
Lister ....?
Stephill...?
Lister CS Start-o-matic are a Stalwart of those wanting to live of grid, We had a few ST based standby units which worked well. LD as well.
CS are bringing good money now the enthusiasts are rounding them up.
Petter AV range, there is a couple of them on ebay atm.
