hi all

im in the process of building up a bike and have a quick question:

are chainsets 9 and 10sp exclusive, or can i put a chainset on with a 10sp cassette, shifter and chain and will it work ok?

Thanks in advance

Morgs

If it's a single front ring then yes you can mix 10 speed chains with 9 speed rings. If you're going to shift between multiple front rings though I am not sure if that will work.

I use a 9S roadie triple chainset with a 10S transmission no problem. I recently changed to 10S on an MTB and tried it with the old 9S chainset out of idle curiosity, fine. However, You need 10S front mech to match the 10S chainset. A 9S front mech sits too high on a 10S chainset or fouls the middle ring, the big ring being only 42T.

thanks all

so, if ive go this right,

a 9spd front mech, 9sp chainset, 9sp front shifter will work with a 10sp shifter, cassette and chain?

what about the rear mech?

thanks

In answer to part one, yes. I've done that and it's worked fine. I did think I might have to bend the front mech plate to narrow the gap at the front but it wasn't necessary.

The only thing I haven't tried is a 9S rear mech with a 10S cassette and chain so you'll have to try it for yourself or wait for someone who has.
