Changed it, slept the machine, apparently not remembered it correctly, now I've had dozens of gos trying to remember what I changed it to.
Have I locked myself out and it's just telling me the password is incorrect? Will it eventually let me in or am I wasting my time?
If it's on a domain with a password lock policy set then yes; if it's not on a domain then unless you've set it up to lock out after x failed attempts then it'll never lock.
Ah:
"Failed password attempts on workstations or member servers that have been locked by using CTRL+ALT+DELETE or password-protected screen savers do not count as failed sign-in attempts unless Interactive logon: Require Domain Controller authentication to unlock workstation is set to Enabled."
Why I do I post questions and THEN figure out the right question to ask Google?
Question is - if I have so locked my machine out - will it say 'you have exceeded the password attempts' or just keep telling me the password is wrong?
Even on a domain, I think the default setting will only lock it for 30 minutes, then you get to try again.
You could always log on as the local admin account and reset. You do have a local admin account right?
It will tell you the account has been locked, not just that the password is wrong I believe.
Try typing your password in the username box, just to make sure the characters you think you are typing in are actually the ones on screen.
Trailwagger is right in that it will tell you that the account it currently locked.
There's no username box - workstation is locked, but I am logged in.
Thanks folks. I can keep guessing then.
You tried the old password , right?
Otherwise take the hit and power down (with all your fingers crossed)
Or you could ring a domain admin and get them to do a password reset .... ?
Ah, that would be easy, steve, but I am at home, and I cannot connect to the work network without the VPN which I cannot access due to being locked out.. Also there is a hole in my bucket.
CTRL-ALT-DEL and Switch User will take you to a full logon screen (if it helps). There's no username box - workstation is locked, but I am logged in.
Ah no - switch user is before yo press ctrl-alt-delete
This is why I set all my passwords to "PasswordRulesSuck#1" 😀
So now I have the login prompt but I no longer have the unlock screen prompt. So I risk locking myself out now.
