You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
We're here in not so sunny Wales, forecast is good if cool tomorrow but dry. We all have boots, shorts, tees, hats gloves and waterproof coats. Thinking of just going for a wander. All fit and can cover 10 miles no problem on a Derbyshire hill walk. Totally unplanned, will we die?
I appreciate Snowdon isn't quite Everest but I'm sure all hills can be tricky.
Yes.
Snowdon today

Whats the wind looking like?
So long as the forecast and, more importantly, sky tomorrow looks okay you should be fine.
Probably go for trousers rather than shorts though since could still be a bit chilly on top.
You would need to decide your route through.
Llanberis being the easiest and Crib Goch being the most interesting.
I would have thought nothing of doing that six or seven years ago, but a shonky left knee means I’d struggle to get to the top, let alone back down again!
I regularly walk six miles or so during the day, but that’s on flat, smooth ground, Snowdon? That’s a long, hard think, dunno about walking it!
Yes. Yes you can.
Just don't go via Crib Goch unless you have a proper taste for adventure.

Pssst... There's a train... Sshhh.
I heard there's a small Wetherspoons at the top..
Yes you can walk up fairly easily as it's a pretty obvious path all the way up. Make sure you take waterproofs and sturdy shoes. There is a cafe up the top but it's very busy, be prepared with your own food and drink. Start early, there can be a queue to stand at the trig point
a small Wetherspoons at the top..
Not far wrong there. And a queue a few hundred long...
Dragged our kids up it a couple of years ago at 7 and 10. Was planning the pyg truck but weather was crap so took the Llamberis Trail. Easy walking. They loved it. A lot longer than your typical Derbyshire peaks, but not challenging.
Don't get me wrong - I'm really pleased Snowdon is popular. Honeypots are brilliant and keeping folk kettled up in nice little pockets of land. A bit like a sacrificial anode on a ship stopping the rest rotting away.
I just can't fathom why anyone would choose Snowdon in the half term when there are so many more tranquil spots you could go instead.
Yeah I'd also avoid Snowdon at this time of year.
I'd go for a nice walk up the carneddau.
This time a couple of years ago I took train up. Train broke on way down so we were returned to top. Beer ran out at top, it started to get a bit feral 😀
I did it age 7, ranger path, but that was on a nice day. You can just walk it but easy as it is you are still at 1000+m as t 54 degrees north. Weather can be very bad so take some warm clothes and waterproofs even if it seems ok at the bottom.
Hey we're here, kids fancy it, probably just to 'gram it. I don't mind, they've done plenty of challenging stuff, daughter's d of e gold this year so it'll probably be a breeze for her and laddo is racing on Saturday whilst we're here. It's cheap as well which dad likes 😉
Temperature drops by one degree for every 200 ft of ascent. Do the maths and don't think that because it's nice and warm at the bottom it will be nice and warm at the top.
Don't go unprepared.
Did Pyg last weekend as part of a stag weekend and was blown away with the number of people going up (and down).
All sorts from kids about 5 upwards, some in walking gear and some with fashion trainers!
Almost every car parked on the road had a parking ticket when we got down.
If I can drag my fat arse up there in knackered FiveTens (has a hole in the sole of one of them) pushing a bike I’m sure most people can. There’s a couple of shops on the way up, a cafe at the top and of course you can always turn back if It starts to get tricky.
My lad did it aged five. See the notes about Crib Goch. Not all routes are equal. Have a nice day but don’t expect solace.
Temperature drops by one degree for every
200 ftof ascent. Do the maths
One degree per 500ft, btw
Llanberis is long but straightforward. Pyg is a bit exposed in places, but doesn't seem to worry kids (mine anyway .. we were kicking foot holds in snow last time .. was dodgy to go back so descended Llanberis and taxi back to lower pass car park).
If you need to ask the question, I 'd steer clear of the Crib 😀
Today's winner of the duel Darwin award went to the bloke who was carrying a toddler on his shoulders up where the pyg and miners meet, outstanding choice of footwear in trainers. Was a nice day, waaaaaayyyy too busy for the wrightys tho but we were warned and I warned the kids but they wanted in. We actually sacked the last bit off as it was just mayhem trying to get past people. Had a chat with one of the rangers on the way down and he reckoned the congestion was one of the most dangerous parts about the actual walk up.
Anyhoo, beautiful scenery and views. There would be many victims tho if the weather turned, never seen so many poorly equipped people up on a hill.
Saw another contender for the Darwin Award at the top of Snowdon at Easter. A gang of lads who’d clearly got the train up, all in shorts, T-shirts and flip flops
You've got it all wrong. Llanberis is the winch-up climb and Rangers is the fast descent 🙂
Nice one family_wrightyson
So it was properly into summer when we did it, but my pregnant wife and I took the train up once and near the top were admiring a family with shorts and flips flops carrying small evian bottles who were walking up the trail.
I've seen someone in speedo's and trainers walking up on a summers day and another time a guy in three piece suit, bowler hat and umbrella over his wrist, takes all sorts
I agree with the warden's comments, there was so much congestion on the 'tricky' bits last weekend that it would have been easy for an accident to happen.
I first walked up ben nevis(pretty much first hill I ever went up) with zero training, a quarter of weed, 20 fags, a disposable barbeque, some square sausage with some butter and rolls.
It was baltic up top, and I was freezing, I had still to discover water proofs, but I survived, just, was fair sore the next day, took ages! 😆
🤣🤣😂
