iPhone se vs new moto g7

Would I see an improvement in camera/speed/screen from my se to the new g7 moto?

I read an article about moving from iOS to the Andriod ecosystem a few years back when very seriously considering it. Like many I've become less enamoured with all things Apple over the years. Mind, the still not completed Windows Color Engine is keeping me from switching - colourmanagement on Win is just far less straightforward (especially since they left the ICC. Even now that Apple seem to have no "colorsync guy" to call upon Macs are still "easier" in many ways.pCs are such great value thiugh, yeah I know. I run both.
Yeah, colourmanagements my job.

Anyhoo back to ios /android. The guy I read up was a pretty knowledgeable techie and started off positive. Hardware cheaper, seemed better too. In the end, though, he switched back, just too many features included in IOS that had to be added or bodged to keep him happy. His opinion not mine!
I'm SURE I'll get beaten up for this, but be fair guys I am not expressing an iOS v Android opinion, I wanted to switch, but reported issues with reacheiving the kind of integration (convergence?) that is built into iOS scared me off.
Reading up took me back to my Nokia days long long ago, addressbook duplication was a bloody nightmare.
If you do it pleasee let us know in a few months. But do your research first.
Neil

Different price point but we recently went through this.
Both myself and my wife had aging iPhone 6
Last autumn mine died I got an iPhone 8
At Christmas wife’s died she got a pixel 3
Same cost same contract GB/month etc
Comparing the two phones
The pixel has
Bigger screen
Better camera
Same storage
USB c connector a bit of a pita as need to buy a new cable to use android auto (cable that comes with phone has usb c at both ends)
Switch process dead easy. She’s no techy but absolutely no problems adapting to using android after about a week of “how do I do this...”
I’m jealous of her phone now.

I don't think there are any full G7 reviews out there yet so it's all a bit speculative at the moment. The G7 has considerably higher PPI but I'd expect the cameras to be much the same. However, for me the real differentiator is that they're very different sizes, the SE is much lighter and more pocketable but there's so little (relatively) screen that you could struggle a bit with some apps. It all comes down to what your priorities are and how wedded you are to their ecosystems.

You can plug the models into gsmarena to get a side-by-side spec sheet if that helps.

edit - I've plugged the Nokia 8 into the comparison because that's what I'm using at the moment and it's available for a similar price.

Not relevant in anyway but I've just got a Xiaomi .
To take a picture press power button twice from black screen to open camera then volume button to take.
So simple , so obvious.

Any easier than swipe left, tap screen?

Well for the OP the SE was released in 2017, so yeah the camera has probably got a bit better from then Specs on the SE are the same as my £150 Motorola

Ad for ease, from the lock screen if enabled on android for years now was just swipe up from the camera icon and take pics, no need to unlock if it's enabled. Pairing with smart devices like a watch also means if they are close it's in a trusted space and will unlock and take quicker

But it's all much of a muchness there, very little between the things they can do, unless you are tied to apple apps like facetime

Which phone is best?

Generally the most recently released high-end phone will be best. For a few weeks per year, that will be the latest iPhone. The rest of the time it will be the latest Android phone.

I've just literally gone from an iphone 5SE to a Samsung S9 after having Apple for years. Don't know about speed Camera seems better imo. Still getting used to the little difference like how the phone actually works, no home button and icons being slightly different. Really like not having to use itunes just drag music files onto the memory card.

I don't hate Apple just less enthused about them these days as I still have an Ipad and MacBook.

I fine the swipe left highly unreliable. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't want to work. Probably most annoying thing about my iPhone. Double click sounds much more reliable.

NB I wouldn't touch Android with a bargepole though, it just seems to have been engineered to be an insecure as possible with no proper App sandboxing.

The Moto has a double twist gesture to launch the camera. I used to find it really useful.

On iOS vs Android:

Both are mature platforms now. Both have their strengths and weaknesses which I'm not going to go into detail about because I'd be here all day and there's probably countless articles on the web doing the same thing more comprehensively. I'd be hard pressed to say whether one is inherently "better" than the other, really it boils down to personal preference. I find iOS unusable, other people say the same of Android, some folk love both equally.

Transitioning from one to the other - in either direction - is going to involve a change from what you're familiar with and will require something of an open mind. This is difficult for some people, easy for others. Also of consideration is that any apps / games you've already bought on one platform won't be available on the other.

On hardware specs:

You cannot directly compare RAM. iOS apps tend to be smaller than their Android counterparts for a number of reasons including (gross oversimplification alert) they have to run on a small number of different handsets whereas Android apps have to work on hundreds if not thousands of different devices. Apple devices therefore typically have (and need) less RAM than Android, this isn't a problem.

Probably going to swap Mrs Seadog over to an Android phone. Her 6s is getting 'funny' in her technical description. For what she uses a phone for there is no need to the s****y abiliies of an iPhone.

Seadog Son has the Moto G6, which is an amazing piece if kit for the money, and if the new G7 is an improvement on that for the same money, it seems a no brainer to me.

After much deliberation, I got a Moto G6 as my replacement work phone. Was almost criminally cheap for how good it is. Battery life is astonishing, charging stupidly fast. Has all the same apps as the iPhone it replaced, and switching across was a breeze. Hugely recommended piece of kit. Compared to my personal phone (Sony) the only places the Moto falls down are waterproofing and the camera.

Always been a fan of the MotoG, I have a G6 plus. But the niggles such as poor Wi-Fi connectivity and Bluetooth irritability might mean i’ll look elsewhere next time. but not apple.

I have an IPhone 7 for work and a S7 Edge for my personal phone. The IPhone was twice as much money on a similar contract. If it was the other way round I would still get the Samsung. Far more intuitive and user friendly IME.

My wife went from a stream of iPhones to something else, which she liked but then went back to iPhone.

I have never had a iPhone but obviously have experience of then. Current phone is a Samsung s7, had s6 before that, Nokia before that. Reckon the answer is iPhone as Android just annoys me.

You can do that as well. You can choose which one suits you best. I prefer the button tap as it can be done with gloves, without looking, while getting the phone out of your pocket

That said, can't really see which OS matters. They both work as phones and run apps.

Does the Motorola still scroll with a tiny little side bar that makes it almost unusable?

The problem with asking iPhone or Android, is its a bit like saying which car, BMW or absolutely anything else? Ones a premium car/phone and the others anything from a Rover City, to a chieftain tank, to Rolls Royce Phantom

I have a cheap Chinese android, currently hate it, mostly because the camera is abysmal, it's not incrementally worse than an iPhone, it's almost unusably poor quality, but then my 5 year old S4 was great (relatively, I'm sure an s9 is better).

Shake for flashlight is indeed fantastic :), except when you have a phone case that holds your bank cards and you then spray them across a darkened room.
