On a ferry to Northern Ireland today. Dog accommodation options are cages in a dark outside cabin or left in the van for 8 hours! Decided to wing it in the lounge to see how long before we got kicked out. 5 hours of being quiet before the barman noticed and made us leave. 😁

Nala's time with us is nearly over, she's ready to be matched with a blind person.

Congratulations to Nala and @Ransos !

Harley arrived last Saturday - it's been a week of disturbed sleep and very loud barks ! Poor Herbert has been taking himself off to her crate for a bit of peace and quiet.

"Hot Thug" and "Thr-Paw" - I know the lawn looks terrible. Blame two dogs and no rain 😉

Lola thinks she's fixed already although Vet has said no walking/jumping for at least 2 weeks and preferably 4. Not sure how we're going to manage that (again, after doing it once already this year)

Roxie also things Lola is fixed and doesn't understand why she's not interested in playing the "The Hat Game" where 30+kg of retriever sits on your head!

I think I forgot to post this a couple of months ago. Huey on the right, with his half brother Dexter behind and the loosely-related Dustie nearest the camera.  Basically the request was "We neeeeeeed some of that Chinese takeaway, we'll die without it"

(Apologies of it has been seen already,  I'm only scrolling through on the phone and didnt spot it)

Home-made snuffle box for Mr Sprocket yesterday - there's nothing he likes more than tearing apart cardboard boxes, paper bags, old tee-shirts, rolled-up towels etc in search of hidden treats, see also scent games, training and anything else that taps into his basic drives - he's 50% goofball and 50% machine 🙂

Just had to take my mate Charlie to the vet one last time . It's been a few years since she was able to come out with me on the bike but I used to love our days out together.

She was the best dog you could ever hope to have and absolutely brilliant with our kids .

Do me a favour and give your furry pals an extra meaty treat and a good tummy rub today.

There's been a few celebrations around us recently, the fireworks aren't great for anyone's sleep.

When I thought a greyhound couldn't get any lazier, she takes it to another level.

Worst part about dog ownership, they leave such a massive paw print on your life, but it’s a final act of love and gratitude for all they’ve given. Hugs all round.

Quick Islay update! She spent the first week or so with a very loose tummy, which was diagnosed as giardia. Once that was sorted she’s come on in absolute leaps and bounds.
Things are thawing slowly with Willow, who still warns her off when she tries to bite her ears! IMG_2794.jpeg

Our puppy Mason had Giardia and it absolutely wrecked his desire to eat. He did eventually (we're talking 4 weeks) eat again after having a stay with another dog but his appetite never recovered. Utmost respect to his guide dog trainer who still managed to train him !

Islay was weaned onto VetSpec kibble when we got her. It was going through her alarmingly fast, and after a week she was passing blood and mucus and was starting to dehydrate. Four-pronged attack of probiotics, rice and chicken, antibiotics in case it was an infection and Panacur wormer in case it was giardia and she was sorted in about three days. Since then she’s been on raw tripe or chicken plus a few vegetables and hasn’t looked back.
She was under average weight but tall for her breed, but has since caught up.
Took both out at the same time yesterday for the first time . Willow proving a good role model for heel work AND saving the family from next door’s cat :

Well done Nala and @ransos

Harley is 5 months next week and turning into a cracking pup apart from the ridiculously early morning habit which is showing no sign of improvement. I never thought 5am would feel like a lie in but we are getting to that point.

Is it your car though? Our dipstick has jumped into strangers cars if the door opens an inopportune moment when being walked. Something of a surprise for the occupant to suddenly find a Cockerpoo sat on their lap. 🫣 Got on a school bus once that was waiting to pick up too!

No generally cars are bad. She "tolerates" us asking her to get in.

She knows she's a lump though so if bribes are insufficient, we have a standoff. Much to onlookers amusement.

Stacey spent the weekend with her favourite person, her Nanna.

Nanna used to own greyhounds when she was a little girl, so is a big fan. Makes such a fuss of Stacey and she reciprocates.

This is her chilling in the sitting room waiting for Nanna to come back from church.

We haven't got the hang of bringing the ball back despite nearly 5 years of training. He's sadly lacking.

Sprocket's not fussed for balls - he has an uncanny ability to ferret them out of the undergrowth, but virtually no interest in playing with them, let alone fetching the things - but I've taught him a basic puppy retrieve with a Kong Wubba, basically a sort of combined tug, throw, ball toy with a built-in squeaker, he loves a squeaker 🙂 He gets to play tug with it, 'drop it', gets sat down, toy gets thrown out, 'get it!' brings it back and is rewarded by having another game of tug, and repeat...

I think he gets his beans from chewing on the squeaker, the enthusiastic praise when he brings it back in and the tug game rather than having a really strong retrieve drive, whereas a spaniel or lab or golden will be wired to want to carry stuff in mouth and bring it back to you. He's also indifferent to frisbees, which is a source of some sadness to me 🙁

I know I've done these 3 before, and even put the same picture up twice. But... it's amazing how much they will concentrate on a piece of macaroni cheese (OK, penne cheese) if they think it might be coming their way

Our guy Sprocket - aka Mr Sprock, Sprock-a-Doodle-Doo, or more accurately, Stubby-tailed Chaos Demon - is seven months old now and just fantastic. As you'd expect from a GWP puppy, he's not exactly super chilled at all times, but a mix of gundog training, scentwork, regular obedience stuff and more is keeping him occupied. His hobbies include landscape architecture, winding up next door's Westie through our adjoining gate and looking deceptively cute.

He's also starting to find an 'off-switch'  which he has located at the top of my left thigh 🙂

We've just hit seven months and teenage dirt-bag stuff is kicking in. Still mostly sweet and biddable, but occasional 'selective hearing' and some interesting adolescent stroppiness from time to time. Definite criminal tendencies emerging...  🤣

Mr Bill taking a well earned sleep after having his back leg rebuilt from a serious break last week. The orthopaedic surgeon said it was as bad as he’s seen and it’s been lucky it wasn’t in more pieces (only three breaks just above the hock) else it would have been a fuse or even amputation. I gave him the benefit of taking the cone of shame off as he’s got to have it on for six weeks until he has his external fixator off his leg. Seriously stressful and emotional week thankfully now behind us.

At 11 Lola has taken to water this year. She hasn't quite got the hang of when to shake off though. So she jumps in and then shakes 🤣

https://imgur.com/a/C1oiDAo#4nvUsRA

She has come along way from being a tool around other dogs to okay with some dogs and has now reached "groul walk" accepted by the dog walker. Thats a happy tail. She's a bit of a cougar and runs about after all the young males

He's well damped tho 🙂

@tuboflard - Lola has a "Z" repair to her cruciate about 2 months ago. A month of mostly bed rest and still on lead walks. Now at the Hydro clinic twice a week. Really making a difference. She gets in the big pool next week.

Might be worth considering if you have one close.

Some friends of ours lost their Miniature Schnauzer last year, very suddenly, at only 8. They kept in contact with the breeder that Molly came from, and a new litter arrived fairly recently. So now they have a Hugo.

Meet Hugo:-

Hugo.jpg

He may only be 10 weeks old, but already feeling brave enough to growl at our Huey who got a bit up in his face. The rapscalion will clearly have spirit.

We still miss Stanley immensely, that feeling is not going anywhere, but there is some light now at least. Every 2-3 weeks we meet up with some or many greyhounds and a few of our friends for walks (or cafe trips). I take photos at our local greyhound trust walks too, so get plenty of hound time from that.

This weekend was a big weekend of walks so I took a few photos as I always to. This time I also strapped an action camera to my treat bag. The results will, hopefully, make any dog lover smile 🙂

Who doesn't love a feisty mini schnauzer?
Here are Roksi and Bodhi from earlier in the summer.

It took longer than anticipated for Nala to go to her new owner, but she leaves on Monday.

It must be quite a wrench. Kudos to you, I'm not sure I could do that.

Lola just back from Hydro. Booked another 10. She's going well but another round should get her 100%

That second pic just cracks me up every time I look at it. She's six now, got a bit of jowl-y 🙂

Roxie went to the groomer. Not impressed. Rolled in Fox Poo this morning and had to be hosed off. Then shampoo'd and hosed off again. She still looked very pleased with herself tho!

Pippa has spent the week in Northumberland. I’m pretty sure it’s her favourite place. Beach, pub, sausages, fires and tummy rubs. What’s not to love?
