A bit like religion, politics, E-bikes and wood burners, (and everything else) dogs seem to be a contentious subject on the STW forum. Therefor I propose a dedicated dog thread wherein users can post pictures, talk about them or pour vitriol and scorn on bad owners. Even propose kicking them or doing that thing that Mick Dundee does if they get a bit feral.

I missed the opportunity to post in the restaurant thread because of bloody work!

Chewie demands a dog thread!

I’ll start with the contentious opinions.

Dogs were a large contributor in the evolution of modern society. Playing an integral part in helping mankind move away from the Hunter gatherer lifestyle.

Dogs are not wolves and not pack animals that require dominance blah blah blah. Most dog trainers who say they are don’t now what the hell they’re taking about. The pack behaviour that most people refer to is based on studying captive wolves. They don’t work like a family, which a wild pack is. They act like a prison gang, which is what they basically are.

To add to funkmasterp's comments, dogs have evolved/been bred alongside people for a long time now, and the relationship between the two is unique. Most of us no longer need dogs to do the jobs they once did, but that link remains and both species benefit from it. Dogs are expert in exploiting human chemistry.

There are admittedly issues with selective breeding that need to be sorted and ditching stuff like Crufts and the Kennel Club would go a long way to helping that.

There are also issues around bad and ignorant ownership that are maybe harder to tackle. Dogs aren't dicks, but that can be trained into them by people that are.

Dogs are ace.

@funkmasterp it makes me a bit sad with all the information we have available that 'pack theory' and the alpha crap is still peddled so widely. Such opinions should not be contentious at all.

Anyway, my hound doesn't require order or discipline, he just need to know he is safe. He need to know that when necessary I have his back and will look out for him. He also knows that he will be getting a bit of my sausage roll or my bacon sandwich - and that is absolutely OK too. In exchange, he will sit patiently by my table (on his bed) and his focus will be entirely on me. It's such a shame he is just so damn long, I'd love to take him into more cafes and pubs.

I quite like dogs. My best friend was a boxer called Cato as in "not now Cato"

He used to greet me every time he saw me with great enthusiasm.

I don't have a dog of my own.

Oddly Chewie doesn’t smell like a dog unless he decides to drop himself into the canal. Smells like biscuits as long as he gets a bath every three week or so. I think it’s a poodle thing, having a different bouquet.

I decided to save money by not taking him for a haircut. After an hour with me and some clippers he looks a tad different 😂 it’ll be back to the groomers as he looks better when he resembles an Ewok.

When I left the Army and was kicking about on a nice stretch of termination leave I wanted to fill my time before having to get a grown up job with something meaningful so I popped along to the Dogs Trust to see if they needed any fosterers.

Things moved quickly and a week later Archie came to stay. He was an old boy of 12, given up after 'failing to adjust' to a new puppy. This separation from his home caused him what we would view as sadness, he'd also been mistreated physically.

When COVID hit he ended staying longer than planned and I'll always be thankful for that, the pandemic complicated my transition and Archie gave me a purpose and as dogs do untold amounts of love, affection and calm.

Sadly arthritis pushed us to make a difficult decision a year later but I will always be glad that we got to give him a good year of love, cuddles and raw mince.

Then there our current house-horse, Her Royal Highness Stacey.

She's an ex-racer, retired early who came to use via the great peeps at the Greyhound Trust.

She is such a playful and affectionate girl whose chitters are off the scale, she happy at home sleeping, or making friends in the park and running around with limbs flailing like an octopus in a tumble dryer.

There's only one thing better than a dog. And that's two dogs

I walked 2500km straight with my last dog, day in day out we got out of the tent and started walking until dusk and we put the tent up again. He loved every last second. I am sure he thought he must have died and gone to heaven. I've got a picture of him on day 75, leaning into the wind at the top of the Appenine mountains, massive grin on his face and just going yeeaaah!

A happy, confident and well trained dog by your side is one of my life's most beautiful experiences.

Dogs are indeed ace

This is Bert. He's a regular poster on STW.

He's a 9 year old male Karelian Bear Dog native to Finland and believed to be one of 4 or 5 in the UK.

They are used for protection from bears and hunting large game (wild boar, moose, deer etc). They don't attack the prey, they use their bark which is individual for each type of prey and agile nature to corner the animal against rock face/river etc and alert the hunter to dispatch it. Their bravery keeps bears away - they are used in US & Japan national parks to avoid bear/human confrontations.

Finland have the black and white variants, Russia have the brown versions (Russia Euro Laika). Bert is descended from the original 13 dogs that started the Finland KBD program in 1953.

They are massively independent, highly intelligent (knows 100's of words and hand signals) and very wilful.

He is an awesome dog with a brilliant personality and character, up for any adventure in any weather.

Edited to add - they have no odour, don't bark unless hunting, and they are not to be washed - their fur has a lot of oil so mud and water are shed off immediately.

Took my last walk with Fin a couple of weeks ago.

She would have been with us 10 years this week.

Planted a cherry tree at the top of the garden this weekend where she used to sunbathe

Had a ride up onto Cutgate on Saturday where we had some great times on the trails together

A dog has the same annual environmental impact as a Toyota Land Cruiser. You can’t purport to care one bit about the environment and own a dog.

They’re completely irrelevant in modern society and a waste of the world’s resources in a climate crisis. They are also a pain for people who don’t have dogs.

What make and model of dog are you using for your Land Cruiser comparison? So dogs are irrelevant then. Best tell search and rescue teams, blind people, disabled people, the police, the military, shepherds, pest controllers etc. As somebody who works in sustainability I’d argue that cars should go before dogs.

I’d get shot of people before dogs. Bigger carbon footprint than a Land Cruiser and a dog!

Best estimate I can find is a medium dog creates an annual carbon footprint about 0.75 of that of an average ICE  family car. A large breed might approach that of a big (and in most cases completely unnecessary) SUV.

It's not just 'working' dogs though. Offset that environmental cost (relatively simple to mitigate to some extent - fish or vegetable based food, composting shit bags, no plastic toys, etc.) against the mental health benefits born of the unique relationship between dog and humanity. If someone doesn't get that, or doesn't like dogs, then that's their loss.

On a selfish level, we have no kids. There's your carbon offset for our dog right there and then some.

A large breed might approach that of a big (and in most cases completely unnecessary) SUV.

Our last dog was a beautiful Newfoundland called Bell who we took in when she was four. Odd thing with giant breeds is people always say things like “I bet she’s a handful and eats you out of house and home” when in reality she didn’t eat a great deal, spent 99.99999% of the time asleep and used to try and hide when you got her lead out!

When we first got her I took her to the vets and as part of a general health assessment he asked me to get her to run to me in the car park. I looked at him and we both burst out laughing. Never going to happen. Might’ve managed a bouncy walk if there was the possibility of a treat involved.

Here she is acting as a pillow for Funk Jr when he was a baby. She was fantastic with him. Just had to make sure he wasn’t in the immediate vicinity when she wanted to lie down. She’d just collapse like a building going down.

All this talk of Land Cruisers... I'm activeky thinking of getting a new Land Cruiser to transport me and my dog (+ a load of other shiiite)  when the new model finally arrive in Blighty.

I'll be able to compare and contrast the benefits, pitfalls and respective operating costs on a proper basis.

What I know already is

- the CapEx for the LC is about 50x that of the Lab.

- Insurance is similar.

- Don't need an MOT for the 1st 3 years on the LC.

- dog MOT and 12 month service is a similar price.

Here's Bruno doing his bit for the environment by catching the number 64 into town instead of getting in the car.

IMG-20240401-WA0007

Image stored on Google Photos which has a CO2 cost of ~11.7 grams/year according to the Institute of Energy and Technology. That's equivalent to the CO2 emissions of your average Land Cruiser travelling around 48 metres. Maybe double that actually, now that it's hosted by STW as well. Which begs the question: can we purport to care about the environment whilst posting on STW...?

Its pretty obvious from pretty much every dog owner post on this thread, that the last things dogs are is pointless*. Sure, some people can get over anthropomorphic**, but I've zero doubt theres a large dose of mental health gains being made. Along with some substantial physical health benefit from being outside for a good amount of time every single day.

*Grudgingly I'd have to admit the same about those bipedal goblins loads of people seem to spawn.

**Which is a common and perfectly natural human behaviour, dogs or no dogs.

Lola eats bug-bakes, which I thoroughly recommend.

So she's probably more like a susuki jimny.

All this talk of Land Cruisers…

If you want to do it properly you have two choices for guaranteed acceptance into "THE COMMUNITY"

A) Land/Range Rover that's obviously on a lease

B) Berlingo/Kangoo or Volve/Saab Estate that's so old it's almost officially a 'classic' car. Edit, an old Jimny is also a good shout.

Failing that, you can usually get away with a cheaper older electric car with a sticker on that says "I'm green" or "solar powered".

One dog, no kids with the additional offset that by not having kids, there's more disposable income to allow us to make greener choices.

Plus Bella is well known in the local area, most walks take twice the time they need to as she stops to greet everyone. It's not just our mental health she helps.

Earlier this week, the wife was told by the company director, to bring Bella into work as she'd not seen her for a while.

"A dog has the same annual environmental impact as a Toyota Land Cruiser. You can’t purport to care one bit about the environment and own a dog.

They’re completely irrelevant in modern society and a waste of the world’s resources in a climate crisis. They are also a pain for people who don’t have dogs."

I couldn't agree more.

I like dogs (why wouldn't I? They've been selectively bred over 20,000 years to make us want to feed and shelter them.) But their owners are not doing a great job on their behalf on this thread. There are negatives to having so many around and "yeah but what about your kids?" and "lol look at his little face" aren't hugely reassuring arguments

Ah good to see the miserable ****s are reinforcing their numbers.

Anyhoo, me napping with my old Lurcher and my mates Jack Russell.

All rescues by the way, like every dog I'll post. But I'm sure some would prefer they where euthanised.

There's no area's of joy now on this forum - any little piece of positivity and someone comes along and ruins it. This is as far removed from the Gaza/Politics threads as you can get.....but nope, it still gets dragged into the trolling shit

The dog. Approximately the size of a stout artisan loaf. Exact Breed mix uncertain, his Jack Russell Mother lived on a Welsh farm and entertained 'visitors'.

Is an absolute pest in pubs because people won't leave him alone and generally he gets handed round the tables for selfies and crisps. We can't afford to eat in restaurants.

The Land Cruiser*. 28 yrs old, doesn't leak on the carpet or smell of vomit. Anymore.

Doubtful.  I'd need to see the peer reviewed piece of academia that supports this.

You can’t purport to care one bit about the environment and own a dog.

Ooh ooh.....I both can, and do!! Dog owner and Greenpeace activist.

In order - Tyson, our daughters dog who unfortunately died last week - a support in bad times,

Lola, a rescue terrier cross, happy as long as she knows where we are!

Dennis, terrier cross, who still doesn’t know his name..

As much as I like dogs. It has to be said that post-Covid there's been a marked uptick in pretty poor behaviour (both owners and dogs) I'll be relived when that starts to settle down again. There's some folks that shouldn't have ever been allowed anywhere near owning one. I read there's been over 3 million dogs introduced to households in 2020 and beyond, and already 5% of those have been abandoned. That's 150,000 dogs...

Lola, just turned 5. Our old lab Murf made it to 15. Wouldn't be without one, would like another one but that's an ongoing discussion. Lola would definitely pee on a land cruiser and make a compelling case why the driver should part with his sandwich.
