We have had a new sand pit delivered today. Can I use the spare barrow load of builders sand, currently making the garden look unsightly, to fill it up? Mrs J says it is too sharp and will turn the kids orange ???? I say it will avoid an unnecessary journey to buy over priced sand from Argos and we wouldn’t avoid a beach with sharp orange sand.
I appreciate this is a first world lock down problem but assistance is required - thanks
Ask your builders' merchant what types of sand are available. Yes,some types from iron-rich sand deposits will turn your kids and their clothes and some of your furniture orange.
Guess how I know this.
Get play sand, unless you want you kids to look like they've been tango'd!!
Had this debate with my wife during building work last year. The kids saw a massive sand mound to roll about on. I declared that you didn’t know what was in it so better safe than sorry. I mean running through it in wellies fine. Sitting in the sand rubbing it into your hair & face, not fine. Captain Miserable?
Yes, builders sand will be fine.......so long as you want your kids to look like Trump
If anyone wants some free kids sand in South Manchester, let me know.

If it has been left uncovered it will most likely contain cat shit. It’s like a lucky dip but different, call it an unlucky dip😀

pffft. Anything goes just now - who’s going to see them. 🙂
the barrow load of sand is sitting there- stick your hands in it - if it’s unpleasantly coarse or stains stuff you’ve got your answer
I remember washing builders sand for our sandpit when i was a kid. There were nylon tights involved but can't recall any more detail than that!
As a dad you sound tighter than a ducks arse, as your Mrs correctly informed you building sand should be sharper maybe not too much , but there definitely be cat pish maybe turds disguised as bread crumbed halloumi. Play sand is white and cover it up at night. Do you buy the roughest cheapest bog roll for them too ?

It won't matter if it's just to lay patio slabs on.
A good tip I heard was to put the pit into a cheap dome tent if it's not too big. You can zip it up to keep the cats and other unwanted visitors out and most of the sand and kids in.
My description was that play sand is like your egg timer sand or fine grade, building sand should be for binding purposes slightly grittier whereas concrete sand probably 5mm down but fines removed. The kids will be making sandcastles not laying the patio or maybe get told to

Depends on how far the Mrs has pushed the boundaries.
Sharp sand or kiln dried - the stuff for rendering and/or block paving is what you want.
Permanent sand castles ftw! \o/
Ok thanks - i cant handle trump ets so that is a no.
Anyone got any ideas how to dispose of a very full barrow of sand and cat shit (half a dumpy bag) during lock down?
Yes.

You’ve seen the Great Escape I presume
Dig a big hole in put the sand in it.
