[Closed] Can I use a 12v (60W) Halogen driver to power up 12V LEDs?

Under cabinet lighting in the kitchen. We have old halogens. The current (no pun intended) driver is labelled as "Electronic Transformer for Halogen Lamps 60VA" Can I simply solder on LED strips in place? Surely they only draw the current that they need?

As long as it is a constant voltage driver at 12v output and you have 12v LEDs it'll be fine. Just need to be wary as some systems are constant current rather than constant voltage. Also check it is DC, there are some AC systems out there.

Thanks. Looking at it it looks like it might be an AC output, which I wasn't anticipating.

May well be. Probably worth replacing. They are very cheap and a new one may be more efficient and last longer so better in the long run.

I tried and the voltage isn't stable enough so they flicker.

(Also I'd expect them to fail quicker due to this)

As nick say's they are pretty cheap... and also much smaller (and discrete)

Our under cabinet is powered by a tiny one came out of a plug-in socket for LED's... It easily fits in a matchbox sized container which is glued (well  I used sealant) on the underside of the cabinets inside the strip thingy...
