To get 800 miles out of a tankful of fuel from my filthy engined Mondeo?

Filled up 2 weeks ago, went on holiday to Norfolk, drove around etc, came home. The fuel light's just come on with 730 miles on the odometer.
Shirley I can get another 70 miles out of it?

Fill up a diesel can just in case, and find out.

I can get 850 miles of mediocrity out of an Insignia, so I'm going with yes. If you've got the balls that is. You have, haven't you? 🙂

I had a MkII Golf that would seemingly run forever, even when in the red.
Regular yells of "We're on vapour!"

There's a lot of safety net built in, I reckon.

There's a lot of safety net built in,

70 miles of safety in my A4 estate. Found this out to my chagrin on the M5 on the way to work once 😳
It'd been a busy weekend ok. I thought it might just make it, and there's a garage near to my work.

I'd say no, just to balance the angst.
I reckon it'll pop at the busiest traffic light section of what ever road you are on, at the most inconvenient time of day and a bloke in a white XC90 will sit behind you on his horn whilst you sweat profusely grabbing at every knob, switch, button, key and phone with a policeman on a motorbike just sat on your front quarter watching you text your Julie.

I'll just drive up & down the road till it gets to 800 miles & not stray too far. 😆

You can get 50 miles out a transit with the light on. Burn coast don't brake.
A slight misfire will happen to waken you up in this zone!

@essel; given the gov's fantastically generous non-inflation busting pay award for prison officers.....go on, blow your windfall on a few drops of unleaded 😆

I had a 406 once (ok sorry) that conked out claiming it still had 40 miles in the tank. No misfire - just not running any more.
Fast lane of the M1.
They coast quite a long way.

That would probably do more harm than good.

Me too. My megane with a faulty fuel gauge conked out on the m60 at the Bredbury junction. My phone had conked out too so had to yell into a roadside phone with 9 lanes of traffic around me making anything said back to me inaudible. Horrible experience. Got towed within minutes to much relief.

Yeah, no misfiring. Just out.

Managed an extra 90 miles in my Fabia a few months back after the display said 0, no cough or anything! I now make sure to remember that large parts of Mid Wales have petrol stations that don't open after 10pm.

Also drained the tank on an old Audi 80 I was scrapping years ago. Despite the gauge saying well below zero I got 2 gallons out of it!!

I got caught out in my old Mighty Vectra by the quaint opening hours of Dorset filling stations.

It really didn't like it as the fuel system needed to be primed.

700 ish miles on 55 litres though . 😀

I think JC on Top Gear proved there is still plenty in the tank once the light comes on. I can't remember how much mileage he go out of the tank reserve on that episode where he drove an Audi A8 from London to Edinburgh and back again. I think his red light came on around Nottingham or something on the return leg and he still got back. And that was in a big Audi with a 3ltr diesel engine.

I think you'll be fine. Switch off the A/C, close windows, plod along in the left hand lane.

I find most diesels do have a bit of a safety zone - my Exeo has a 60ltr tank, the book says so, I've driven it to the bottom of the red and a bit further still - squeezed 56 litres back into it.

Still, you're relaying on Ford instruments and of course you know it's not like a petrol, if it stops it might not start again without the input of a mechanic.

Don't diesels self bleed these days (and have done for 10yrs or so?)

Don't diesels self bleed these days

some can be forced to but its absolutely terrible for the pumps as theirs zero lubrication for this period

some have electric primer pumps that mean they self pressureise - all gravy

some have manual primer bulbs attached to filter housing - great when new - in later life prone to leaking.

some are total ****ing nightmares and have a port you attach a primer tool too - these usually dont work last time i had to do this i ended up clamping the fuel tank pressure vent and pressurising the tank with air before cracking the fuel lines to force fuel up to the pump.

and if its a 6th gen transit dont bother - put fuel in and just tow it till it bump starts lifes too short to **** around with them.

This with the Mondeo's I've had. Usually needs to be tow started as a DIY remedy. I wouldn't risk running out on the side of the road.
