I know nothing! That's my starting point but I'm trying to communicate with a firm overseas and they are saying that my IP address is blacklisted. They sent me a screen grab from their IT dept but it just lists the number and some names for why they think its bad!

I am having to use a Yahoo address at the moment which is not the end of the world but I'd rather get the company email going. No problems at all anywhere else which suggests to me that its their problem rather than mine. Fasthosts host the website and associated email addresses (I know they are not highly thought of) but as I said, not had an issue before.

Any ideas?

If you're talking about email issues, I'd hazard it's not your IP address which is the problem, rather Fasthost's. You'll need to take it up with them.

I'd hazard Fasthost addresses have been blacklisted due to the actions of other people using the same service. Depending on why / where it's being blacklisted, you might be able to take it up with the destination to whitelist your address. Even then, "your" address might be a random allocation of a pool and shared with thousands of others. There's every chance that your best course of action would be to change providers.

Thanks Cougar so adding a new email address i.e. from name@company to anothername@company is unlikely to help?

I'd agree with Cougar: try contacting Fasthosts' tech support as a first step.

I used to use Fasthosts for a personal website and sometimes hits blacklist issues similar to what you've described. I always assumed it was due to actions of a third party using the same shared hosting service and to be honest never got to the bottom of it.

Switching hosting firms would end up with your email server having a different IP address and hence may solve the problem assuming the new IP isn't on any blacklists(!). There are tools you can use to check blacklist status of a given server IP.

One middle ground may be to look at using Fasthosts (or whoever) for your website, and a dedicated provider for email. The benefit here is that a big provider is probably pro actively fighting blacklisting.

You can use mxtoolbox to see if you're on a blacklist, might help you broach the subject with fasthosts. If someone's been spamming from your domain (for example), that will get you blacklisted.

Is your work email/hosting on a dedicated server (meaning you get your own IP) or is it shared hosting? The latter may be more problematic but as above, contact Fasthost and see if they can help.

You can use MX Toolbox to see what black lists you appear on and then contact them directly to ask for the flag to be lifted.

EDIT - beaten to it!

We are only small so doubt we get a dedicated server. Appears that I'm blacklisted under SPAMCANNIBAL, LASHBACK and one other!

Guilty by association it would appear!

Sorry - subsequent question. Can the company at the other end allow my specific email address to get through or is all the control exerted over IP addresses?

The short answer is "it depends." How they're implementing spam blocking is at the whim of their IT department. Without knowing what they're using and how it's configured, we're speculating at best.

Ugh - just wrote a reply which didn't post...

Anyways - if you're having problems with getting blacklisted on a shared IP then someone on that same IP is probably sending out spam, either knowingly or their site has been compromised.

The simplest thing to do is set up your email using something like G Suite (formerly Google Apps for Business). I run my email through it along with recommending it to clients, you can still use addresses such as info@yourcompany.co.uk and your preferred email software however uses Gmail which seems to be about as reliable a service as I've found.

It's about £4 a month (after a 30day free trial, you can have as many email aliases as you want but each separate inbox is an additional cost) and has a 30GB Google drive account thrown in along with some other bits and bobs, you just need to update your DNS on Fasthost but when you set it up you're guided through the process.
