It's new camera time and the Rx100 mk1 is £279 (with £50 cashback) in John Lewis. Is there a better camera about around that pricepoint?
Looking for aperture/shutter priority, image quality, small-ish. Not too interested in a large zoom.
Probably not. I had a Mk1 from classifieds a few yrs back for a similar price.
IMO/for my use:
pros:
- truly dinky
- excellent image quality even in low light
cons -
- truly dinky/slippery*/tiny buttons (helped with aftermarket stick-on grip)
- faff to operate/unintuitive
- Not useful for macro
With the mentioned grip and set to AV it was a really good point and click, but eventually the lens mech died. I ditched it and replaced with a (now discontinued) Pentax MX-1 which was chunkier/sturdier, big fast lens, and much more usable - albeit with a smaller-sensor.
For the price, I'd probably recommend the RX100 MK1 for your stated requirements with the above caveats/extended warranty.
Worth a look at the Lumix GX800. It is available for about £300. It is similar sort of size, with the kit lens. Plus it has a tilt screen, I think this is very useful. Even of you don't change the lens, it is a rather capable compact camera.
Whilst the gx800 is small for a mirror less camera, it's still about twice the volume of a rx100.
It's look at other premium compacts like the canon g9x mk ii which grey import on eBay is about the same price and Panasonic lx15, but you'll be lucky to get down to 279 sort of price on that even with grey imports on eBay. They do both cover some of the short comings of the rx100 (e.g touch screen) but also have their nuances.
I find camera labs great for reviews.
Thanks all, good info.
I was interested in the G9 and it handles quite nicely, although I reckon for a reassuring, ie JL type retailer, it's going to be about £100 more than the sony and that makes it unappealling
I will sell you mine for 100 notes?
