My work didn't bother with the furlough thing for me and instead have ejected me in to a world fecund with work opportunities, haha! Last day on the books is the end of this month so unemployed as of June 1st.

I'm aware that universal credit applications "take a while to go through" and then you have to wait about 5 weeks for payments. Can I apply now, or do I need to wait until June 1st?

Yes you can. UC is an in-work and out of work benefit, and will simply take into account any earnings that are received.

Put it in now 🙂

Yes, what @bearnecessities said.

I also believe your claim stays open for 6 months after your not entitled so that you can update your earnings every week/month just in case you qualify again. So get your claim in now. Add a note explaining your circumstances in your journal.

The dwp also cleared nearly 2 million claims within time and paid over 90% on time. They shifted 1000s of staff to help pay claims.

There's also a UC advance payment option to help you while your claim is paid. It's about 5 weeks from claim to payment..

Good luck.

Ok, thanks for the info team
Application in, identity verified and a note explaining my circumstances left in the journal.

I'll be OK for money in the interim as my work pays me in arrears so I will still have a salary payment next month.

Just to clarify something, your claim doesn't stay open for 6 months but if it is closed then it's often just a case of logging back into your account and reconfirming your details & any change of circs. That is available for 6 months and you keep your original payday. (the 'remaining open' thing was something built into a previous version of UC).

However, currently, if your final earnings that you receive from your employer in your first UC assessment period (AP) are enough to nil your entitlement, it won't actually close your claim and you'll simply be assessed again in the following AP, now with zero earnings to take into account.

That is just for that first AP though, and all other 'your circumstances are all different which effects entitlement' etc caveats apply 🙂
