some kind of scale for context would help. I wonder if some sort of tin opener (paint tin type)?

Got to be for lifting something. Detachable saucepan handle?
Looking at the finishing I don't think it's particularly old.

After my journey to finding a bizarrely obscure stopcock key I'd say it is one of them.

Not really. There's only cubes.

I'd guess a window handle of some sort.

Repose couteau - French custom is to keep your cutlery between courses, so you rest your knife on it when the plates are cleared and it stops you getting the table dirty.

Just tried Google Lens, got lots of blacksmith tools, dentists tools, even a nasal speculum!

Nothing that actually resembles that object. I’m wondering if it’s some sort of tile spacer, or for wood siding or similar?

No clue, otherwise. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Looks like, as mentioned, a knife rest. Porte couteaux … ‘specially as there’s a dozen of them 😁

It would seem odd to mount them on the wall bedside the table. I can't see how it's fixed though so guess it's the photo that's wrong way up.

I'm guessing the little round recess should take a salt pot or similar.
