Last week I asked for recommendations for some boots, and the forum came up trumps: I placed an order based on your recommendations.

This time it's televisions. I am completely clueless when it comes to technology, and our current TV is now a bit long in the tooth, so we're looking to replaced it.

The current TV is a 32" Toshiba, that's used with an Amazon Firestick. It does the job.

What features might I look for in a new TV that I might not be aware of? I think the Firestick provides me with Smart TV capabilities (?), but what else might come in useful? I'm thinking along the lines of connectivity with devices, that kind of thing.

Budget is up to £400, although cheaper would be better. Size, bigger than 32" but no more that 42".

I've had a quick look on some websites and there are some brands I've never heard of (Veltech/Hisense/TCL), are these any good, or is it worth paying more for a Samsung/Sony/LG etc?

as always, advice is much appreciated.

I always buy my TV's from Richer Sounds the 6 year warranty is worth its weight in gold, last tv we had was an LG the board went about 4 years in. Richer Sounds gave us a voucher to the value of the old unit we now have a Panasonic I preferred the darker black on that years Panasonic, but did have to add to the voucher the LG tv was still a good tv with a great picture.

This was a couple of years ago so I'm slightly out of touch, I think for £400 you can get a decent Samsung or Panasonic from their range.

Not sure if it still holds as true as it used to, use a firestick roku chhromecast etc for smart apps as the manufactuers seem to lose interest in updating smart tv apps after 2 years.

This seems sensible so I bought a Toshiba. It's brilliant.

The reality is that, unless you are an AV geek, then all modern televisions are pretty good and many of them share the same components and software.

The operating system on my Toshiba is identical to the Hitachi that my daughter has in her room. One son has a Samsung and one has a Blaupunkt. We have a JVC downstairs. Theyre all perfectly fine.

What I'm saying is ...get whichever one is the right size and is the price you want to pay. It'll be fine.

TVs are a funny one. Only you have your eyes, so you really need to go to a shop and look at them in person.

When we got ours we went to Richer Sounds and John Lewis and looked at all the TVs within our budget and roughly the size we wanted. Ended up with a Panasonic 42" from JL. The 5 or 6 year warranty gives you peace of mind.

Whatever you get the Apps will be unsupported after 2 or 3 years. We just bought a ChromeCast which is faultless.

This, we got a great Samsung for £400.

See what's about, check the reviews and pick something that ticks your boxes.

I was amazed how good a TV you get for your money these days TBH.

We bought a Sony a few weeks ago, pleased with it so far. The Samsung it replaced broke much too soon for me to ever buy one of to buy again.

Probably worth having a look on this thread.

Don't forget that newer TV's have much smaller bezels so a 40" is probably about the same size as an older 36" TV.
