Looking to spend around 40 odd quid on one for backup. Are there any brands to avoid or to buy?

Not a lot to choose between them. Personally I'd say spend a touch more and get a portable 2.5" drive based one, a bit more convenient as they won't need a power supply.

Depends how you're using it exactly though of course - it's handy for me to have my backup drives portable.

I've got a lacie rugged, can recommend. It's quite, fast and works.
