Their site is awful - I simply want to know:

- Can I use it wirelessly over our wifi network?

- Does it play terrestrial TV (ie, can I watch BBC 1 / ITV etc, or can I only access iPlayer etc)?

The reason I ask is that I am wanting to set up a TV in our kitchen and I only have a power point (no aerial point).

Cheers

Does it stream them okay?

For example, I tried watching the football on my laptop via a web browser version of the ITV player last week and it was awful (despite a generally fast internet connection).

Ohh, and do I need to buy a subscription or can I just buy the box and watch the free apps?

You can add ITVPlayer (woeful piece of shite), 4od, iPlayer and demand5 and watch without paying, though you do need to create a free account with them IIRC.

I've found Now TV streaming a bit hit and miss TBH (their movies that is), despite having fibre broadband and a good wifi signal.

Fire stick is better in every way

You can do what you want to varying degrees via a variety of solutions inc

Apple TV and iPhone/iPad
Chromecast and phone/tablet
All-in Streaming device like an m8s box

We use option 1 the most, my tv has no freeview capability nor do we have an ariel. To be fare we watch very little live tv (news mostly) so its not a hassle.

I guess if I just got something like this I could use the TV built-in apps rather than a separate box?

The problem with the built in apps is that support for them can just end, and you're suddenly left with a not so smart TV (I'm looking at you LG!). Get a dumb TV and a smart box/stick/whatever, much more flexible in the long run. Also, built in Wifi for TVs can be crap as the TV itself shields the signal quite badly.

Yes, if iplayer etc is all you're after.

Now TV is basically a selection of the Sky offering as well.

This is how I bought mine, box with 6 months entertainment bundled:

Can't say I've used it much though.

Good luck leaving NowTV (aka Sky) we got a 4 mth Movie's bundle at xmas + box for about £20ish , I went to cancel at the end of April and £10 a month became £6 ... then £3 ... which i couldn't say no too !!

To be fair the Now box works a lot better than our smart samsung tV.

If I got a dumb TV and a NowTV box I guess I could fix the Now box to the back of the TV to keep things tidy (wall mounted TV) - although I guess it will effect the performance of the remote...

You're better off paying the extra for a 'normal' Roku if you don't want the Sky packages - you aren't restricted in apps you can install then, though it'll cost you a bit more upfront.

You can get a Roku app for your phone (the Now TV box is a nobbled Roku box) - it works over Wifi so you can ditch the normal remote anyway. I'd echo what brassneck said, if you don't want to use the Now TV services, just get a regular Roku (or Android TV box etc etc). A chromecast might be a good option for you?
