You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Running about 30 miles a week at the moment but everytime I go over about 6 miles I get a pain in, the top of my fibia area, just under my knee.
The pain ranges sometimes from mildly uncomfortable to quite sharp meaning I have to stop running and walk home. There's generally not any pain following stopping activity.
I've been doing a fair bit of strength training too but when I work on the legs I don't get the pain.
Can't work out if I'm just being a puss and I need to run through it or if I might do some major damage if I carry on and was hoping to race my first half next month.
Any ideas? Thanks.
Shin splints?
Or too high?
Listen to your body anyway. It doesn't complain for no reason.
30 miles a week is quite a lot and definitely in injury territory
Go see a physio who will no doubt find that the problem stems from somewhere else, and rest and allow your body to recover a bit
I had knee pain- turned out to be hamstring injury
Maybe chondromalacia-patella On this link note "it is associated with poor knee alignment or imbalance in the tightness of the muscles holding it in place".
A friend of mine had this and pretty much cured himself with light weight training aimed at strengthening the muscles and correcting the imbalance. Leg presses with toes turned in or out apparently target the inner and outer muscles (can't remember their names). So successful was he that the consultant he had been seeing referred a "Team GB hopeful" runner to him. He cured her!
My suggestion would be a sports physio rather than GP.
Thanks for the replies.
I've already had Chrondromalacia 😂
Had physio for that before I started running a couple of years ago. That was in a different location to this pain though. The Chrondromalacia hasn't resurfaced since I've started running.
Ah, OK.
Could it be runners knee? Loads of reading on it and the exercises to help are simple.
I was going to suggest runner's knee, as it was what my physio diagnosed me with when I had similar pain. Have you upped the distance or intensity recently?
He said it often happens due to this, or if you're fit from other sports and start running. Particularly cyclists, apparently - have the cardio but not yet developed the muscle structure to stabilise the knee.
I dropped the mileage down, worked up slowly, did my physio, and it was resolved 🙂
I'll think I'll book a session with a Physio. I've been a offered a London Marathon charity place today but not sure if I can committ due to the monies I'd need to raise quickly and my leg might blow up if I increase my mileage, which I'd like to to get run with a competitive time in mind (competitive for me not the race 😂)
