Not the whole thing but our lease car finally turned up and there is a hefty down payment to make. Sales guy said pay by debit card and I didn't immediately think to ask the obvious question.
Anyone know if there are rules against credit cards for this? I assume that we would gain more protection paying by cc?
I did, paid for our car in s couple of installments to get the Clubcard points

I paid the £7,000 deposit on my car with a debit card, I can’t imagine any issues with a CC, providing you’ve got the credit limit for it
Some places won't accept cc due to high charges - garage we bought from would only allow relatively small deposit on cc
Edit - you get protection for full amount if only part paid by cc

So long as the purchase is under £30k, which if you're buying a used car these days, probably won't be enough 🤣
Paid the deposit for a few cars by CC. Yep garages whinge, they say it’s down to fees, I suspect the extra protection offered is a bit of a thorn in their side Vs the more friendly stance the manufacturer’s finance company might take should an issue arise.
Ex-car sales, and yes, you can, although as said above the garage May whinge as they will have higher fees which they are no longer allowed to pass on.
I recommend people pay part of the price by creating card, even if it’s only £100 or so as that gives them protection on the full price of the car as also mentioned above.
Yes, I paid for a used car with a CC then transferred the balance to another that had a 0% promotional rate.
Surely it is best to ask the garage this question?
Depends on the garage - main dealers it shouldn't be a problem. But I have come across a few small dealers who won't take them. They'd rather turn you away as someone else will be along after you.
But you really should have the down-payment available in the bank. And being a lease car suggests it's new(ish) so should still be within warranty so additional protection shouldn't be needed.
There may also be finance rules relating to the lease - paying a hefty deposit on credit card may mean you will be in more debt than you were approved for.
Not for a lease, but I paid for some of my last 2 cars with credit card, £500 I think so that I had the protection a credit card gives. One was a main dealer, one MotorPoint.
As above, in principal yes, in practice the garage wouldn't accept it.
Just to be clear the card payment for section 75 cover needs to be £100.01 (over £100 the legislation requires). Any other payments will also be covered up to the £30k mentioned.
Eddie Jordan paid for this on his credit card. To be fair, things might have changed since then.

If it’s a lease I doubt you can use a credit card. The monthly payments have to come from a debit card ie your bank account, but normally all those details are taken in advance and I am sure our first payments included the upfront payment
What's the garage called. I will ask them for you?

OP only wants to make the lump-sum downpayment on the CC – I assume the regular monthly payments will be taken from their current account?
I bought a brand new Smart car on credit card many years ago - the points were enough to gert a PS2...
Thanks everyone (mostly everyone!).
It was an idea about any financial regulatory issues which might give the dealer the high ground about refusing a cc over a dc payment that I wanted to be pre-armed with.
It is only the down payment, monthlys will come out of the bank account.
It is a new car but the added protection is helpful in any circumstance I think. Points would also be a bonus...
Don't forget a dealer can refuse to take a CC payment if they want. They don't have to take your money. You need to be prepared to walk if they try and insist on DC and won't budge.
Can't walk, got an interest free deal and that saves us £6-7k over the total cost of the car. Anyway, picked up car and they wouldn't take the full amount on a cc. Agreed £2k max on the cc, rest had to go on debit. I did dig out an old email from them (been waiting since end of last year for the car to turn up!) and it mentioned a £500 limit for cc but again, without reason. I just wanted the keys and to get the hell on the road!
