Good morning all - we are looking to get a few nights camping booked at the start of August (a two night mid-week break so we thought it would be relatively easy but it's proving not so).
Ideally somewhere in the northern half of the Peak District (two family groups coming from different parts of England and it's the most central for all). It's just grass pitches for tents, ideally somewhere with electric hook-up. Somewhere with stuff to do for kids (aged 10 to 14) either onsite or nearby.
Any recommendations most welcome!
Thank you
The Hayfield campsite's decent. Nice location, pubs nearby, good walking and mountain biking. They have electrical hook-ups for camper vans, not sure how that would work with a tent, but obviously you can ask. A fair few local pubs and a restaurant.
For kids, I guess it depends on what you're looking for. There's the Sett Valley Trail - disused railway line - running down to New Mills complete with cafe en route, the Torrs, a gorge running through the middle of New Mills complete with old Mills and a dramatic walkway is quite cool. Easy, flat walk or cycle. There's a park with a pump track in Hayfield. Mostly though it's nice walking, pubs, the odd local shop.
To be fair, for family entertainment, the only obvious options are the Castleton mines about 40 minutes away. If that's the sort of thing you're after, you'd arguably be better camping there. There's an obvious campsite above Winnatts, but I've never stayed there, so can't really comment on the specifics. Have stayed in Edale, which has a proper, small village, in the middle of the hills feel to it, but again there's not much to do bar caffs and a couple of pubs and going up hills.
It also gets insanely busy there on summer weekends as does Castleton. We stayed at Coopers campsite, Edale in the middle of the village with a big group of climbing mates and it was fine and has an on-site cafe. Lovely views from the campsite when the sun's shining.
I guess mostly the Dark Peak is nice scenery, caffs, pubs and lots of sheep plus the odd bit of industrial heritage. And really good mountain biking 🙂 What you won't really find is continental-style campsites with on-site pools, kids' playgrounds etc.
How about Eden Tree in Bradwell? 20mins walk to Hope, not much further to Castleton.
There's a little background hum from the cement factory in Pindale but it's not that bad
We've stayed at Hardhurst Farm a few times, it's a basic site but it's cheap (or was the last time pre-C19). It's not got any play area to speak of but it is a bloody big field so the kids can just run around and wear themselves out.
Cafe on site, pub at the bottom of the road. Hope is a 15-20 min walk away for shops and other pubs.
There’s also Laneside campsite in Hope. Mostly caravans but has tent pitches with hook ups, only a short walk to Hope pubs and shops. Hathersage outdoor pool not far away either and Castleton and the caves the same distance roughly in the opposite direction.
Thanks all - will be checking these out tonight!
