Thinking on taking mini-QT on his first camping trip soon. Any advice on how to keep him warm at night? Is there some sort of camping cot that will keep him protected? Any other tips? We have a 4-man dome that he will be in with me and my wife.
First thing first: keeping warm is easy with more layers and a blanket or two. Depending on you normal routine they may be in grow bags anyway and another layer inside there will be toasty.
As for keeeping them in one place you can go low tech or expensive. Low tech is a couple of bags round them in a corner. Assuming they are not mountaineering yet that will do. Otherwise you can get a small pop up type of see through cot/ tent affair that packs down and keeps them in place.
For reference we camped with 3 month old in march in the U.K. And they were great. We camp with the kids about 6 weeks a year (possibly more) all over the world and the worst situation was in oz. My son was not in the pop up tent in the tent yet as he was immobile so stayed where he was put. That was until we got to the Northern Territory and decided to make is escape in to the bush by crawling out of the tent! Zips were then done up high for the rest of the trip and he did not get far.
In short go for it. They develop so much being in new environments and seem to sleep better in the cold air outside, but so do I
I can recommend one of these - Travel Cot
But we didn't pay that price! Bought second hand and then sold on for what we paid for it.
We camped with our youngest at three months (although it was in NZ in summer) and also again closer to twelve months, in cooler temps. As manton69 says, layers are simplest. Assuming they'll wriggle out from under blankets (ours do/did), put them in a thick/fleece babygro with a thinner one over the top, this will trap a good layer of warm air against them. Might need a third layer on too, maybe the next size up. Makes night-time nappy changes a pain though! (although less of a pain than them waking up through the night due to being cold).
And make sure they have enough layers of insulation between them and the ground. Fleecy blankets and/or folded-up foam camping mats work well.
We camped with babies. Bought kid sleeping bags, both the grow bag kind and a Deuter one. If you can't find a small sleeping bag then tie a strap 1/3 of the way down a grown-up one so they don't slip down. They just slept on a pad like the grownups. Don't use air beds though as they will probably slide into you and get crushed.
For on-site restraint we used a Bumbo. To let them crawl about a bit and play without getting too filthy we put a large tarp down.
They love it. Sleeping all together is probably how we evolved.
We didn't bother with any specialist kit. Ours sleep in the baby sleeping bags that seem common these days so we just took the thickest one of those and some blankets.
As toddlers they sleep in adult sleeping bags, sometimes with a belt to stop them sliding down, but usually I can't be bothered with that.
Blackout sleeping compartments if you son;t want to be up with the larks and then spending 4 hours trying to amuse the kid without waking the rest of the site.
Blackout sleeping compartments
Is this a euphemism for "cardboard box"? 😯
Thanks for the tips. When I say camping, I mean driving to a campsite and parking next to the tent, so I think one of those packable cots would be overkill.
My wife has bought what is effectively a grow bag with arms, so that combined with his normal grow bag should be fine.
@SaxonRide - maybe a sturdy cardboard box isn't the worst idea in the world for putting a mattress + him in! One without a lid obviously!
Lol, they really are called gro bags! That's what we use.
Put some vent holes in the sides at least, doubt there is a risk with an open top but you dont want to risk it etc.@SaxonRide - maybe a sturdy cardboard box isn't the worst idea in the world for putting a mattress + him in! One without a lid obviously!
