HI All,

Off for a family (wife and kids 4 & 7) camping trip in a few weeks time. From my research it seems like a 1980's airbed is not the default choice any more.

I think i need (welcome to other options though) self inflating mats for us all and new sleeping bags for the kids.

Any recommendations for self inflating mats. Obviously I dont want to spend a fortune but want something that will last.

Also sleeping bags for kids...should I just buy adult ones they can grow into?!

If you've no limit on space then adult bags will do. Tie a belt or strap round the bag to stop them slipping down into it too far.

Traditional airbeds still work as well as they used to. A blanket underneath will boost the warmth significantly if you're on colder ground.

Mine sleep on cheap stretcher-style camp beds. Keeps them off the floor and hard to roll out of - they’d always be sliding off airbeds.

edit: this sort - https://www.millets.co.uk/15987165/eurohike-utah-4-leg-campbed-15987165/

They’ve always used adult sleeping bags too - as said, knot or strap to make shorter if needed.

Good tips re adult bags with a knot halfway down.

@simon_g - how small do those camp beds fold down to?

We’ve ended up with 4 of these for us and our two girls.

£44 with 20%

They pack down very small so have been good for bikepacking / wildcamping. They’re comfy and seem to be holding up well.

Quite small compared to a non-backpacking SIM, quite heavy though. Mine are in the depths of the shed but here's a pic I found:

Bag (and sprung legs) about 60cm x 20cm. Quite flat when packed away, one of the easier things to tuck in between other stuff in the car.
