I know it sounds mad, but I'm really wanting to go camping at the moment.
I've survived winter camping before, but never been sub-zero camping, is it a terrible idea or are there ways of still actually being able to be comfortable?
It's OK if you have the right equipment. Don't rely on finding running water though 😳
Steel tent pegs and hammer for frozen ground. Appropriate sleeping bag and mat. Single malt.
It's not cold out.
In my experience of winter camping in the uk (south of) its easier when its cold and dry than mild and wet. When its wet everything gets damp, and muddy, you can't dry anything, you end up with an impossible task of trying to keep some items dry blabla. When it cold you just need a decent sleeping bag and warm jacket for when you have stopped walking / cycling whatever and its fine.
Couple of tips..
It will usually be warmer at the coast than inland.

Sounds good! Not been put off, will be sorting this in the new year!
It is much better this time of year when everything is frozen, nowt worse than cold and wet.. It was -11 here....

My wife and my 8 year old daughter slept out a week last Friday - minus 5 degrees. Admitedly it was for a Guiding challenge, and they wore every item of clothing they own, and took every duvet/sleeping bag we own, hell, even her Build a Bear panda had every item of clothing it owns as well, but if my 8 year old little girl (actually, she's not 8 for another week) can do it, anyone can.
Though one of the other girls woke up and found her pillow had frozen to the outside of the tent.....
Spent last friday night out with my 7yrs old - Bivvy bags, sleeping bags (everest down bag) and thermarests -
-3 overnight but the boy was toasty warm so we will be doing it again before xmas - if the weather holds
Personally I would only do it on a cold clear evening - I would shy away from the wet, warmer evenings.
Def one to do

Proper kit and whisky. Not a problem.
Yup.. It's ace out there at this time of year.

Sub zero camping is more comfortable than damp 1 or 2 degrees - if you've got the down to handle the cold you'll sleep really well ..
Entirely possible, getting pegs in below -10 can be tricky though. Right tent, right sleeping bag and mat and no real issues.
Custard creams before you sleep .......Stoke up the furnace.....
