Hi,

I am really keen to camp in the lakes in August for a week.

My wife is less keen citing weather which ive sort o dealt with 'there are no guarantees anywhere in uk in late August.

But she has now found midges as problem/reason not to camp. What are midges like in the lakes in August?

As ever, depends on the weather and where you camp. Overcast and damp, with no breeze, you're going to get midges. There aren't many places in the Lakes where they get anywhere near Highland levels though.

The trick is to find a campsite where you're more likely to have a decent breeze running through (ie, up the hill a bit, rather than down in the valley bottom with loads of trees)

I’ve never had a significant midge problem in the lakes. The other day we were talking about were the midge line is across the uk. We were working in the basis that the lakes was south of it.

Presumably I have encountered midges in the lakes. But I don’t remember it.

Never had a notable midge problem. Sure there has been the odd day, but no different to my garden in Yorkshire. I’m getting the vibe though that your wife just isn’t that keen and looking for reasons not to go. Would there be a compromise of a camping pod or something which might work for you both?

You can get midges in the Lakes but personally I'd be more concerned about your fellow campers.

This. It’s not about the midges.

I agree, she isnt keen. I want a bit of difference rather than the same places every year. The kids are keen for an adventure too. We have looked at glamping pods, but we are a 5 and havent found a decent supply to sleep 5 most are 2 or 4

^ is there somewhere with glamping pods that allow tents too? Then your wife could have the luxury and the rest of you an adventure?

Lakes in August will be heaving...  it wouldn't be the midges (if there are any) that would be putting me off!!

If it has to be that neck o the woods I'd be looking more to the Eden valley, much quieter but easily accessible to LD and also the Pennines, to escape the crowds.

Pods are often small yes, but we stayed in bell tents as a family of four comfortably (my wife is not a camper), and seemed to offer best of both, camping but with proper beds 🙂

The place we stayed was in Yorkshire, defintely recommended ( http://www.monksmeadowglamping.co.uk/), there's bound to be similar in and around the Eden Valley.

Good point about other tourists. I have not been to lakes in over 10yrs and before kids and that would've been outside holiday times.

I want to see some big hills/'proper mountains' as the kids put it, is Snowdonia Wales quieter that time of year?

I live on the outskirts of the Lakes (lucky me!). Midge problem is nothing like as bad as parts of Scotland (or Kielder...), however as others have said it gets really busy in August.

I'd bring a tick remover too - little ****ers seem to be getting worse year on year 🤣

^^^Lakes looks to be one of the most visited NPs, Snowdonia (Eryri) less so, a bit, but August is going to be pretty full-on in either, if it's proper mountains for 'seeing' (rather than climbing?) staying outside the NP will be cheaper and quieter, and a day-trip in might be the way to go?

For Snowdonia, I quite like the bit around here--  https://caegwynfarm.co.uk/   --good for the bike too 🙂
