Is there a kitchen wipe I can use to safely clean a knife/plate/etc after it's been cutting raw meat or do you always have to do 'washing up'?

I'm always amazed that bacteria is just killed by soapy water, although I suspect it's just diluted and then dies when the knife etc dries out...

We sometimes use wet wipes for 'light' cleaning of stuff, not sure I would for raw meat stuff though

What's wrong with a bit of water and the grass? 🙂 I'm still here.

It's not, but the medium in which it's living is washed away. That's the point of soap - it wraps up the dirt so it won't stick to anything and will float off in the water.

You could use those Domestos wipes if you are worried about bacteria I suppose

IIRC, soapy water DOES kill many of the beasties as the surfactants are pretty good at disrupting their cell membranes. Not a microbiologist so could be wrong though.

You could try something like Clinell universal wipes which are widely used in Ambulance and Hospital settings. I'm no expert so not 100% sure if they'd work as anti-bacterial kitchen wipes but I'd imagine they're better than normal kitchen wipes.

What's the bother with washing up? Camping encourages the least domesticated to muck-in and get it done usually. No point ruining a holiday/ bike race/ whatever with a dodgy stomach for the sake of saving 5mins of washing-up.

Well, it sounds plausible - every day's a school day 🙂

kitchen wipes? are they oversized baby wipes? (got to say i have no interest in the current trends in domestic cleaning products)

we use a little bottle of washing up liquid and a cloth/scourer for proper washing up, fits inside our pots and pans with matches/knives and forks. then baby wipes to scrape the grease out if its bad, as well as our faces/nether regions when away from showers/wash facilities for a few days (not exactly minimalist but by eck they're worth it)

pretty sure i've bivvied out for a couple of days and didn't even bother washing up, just had the crusty remains of the previous days dinner floating in my breakfast, but then again i hadn't cooked a raw chicken

Just lick everything clean. It worked in that supernoodles ad from the 90s 😉

Take a dog?

Depends on the people you're with, though. I was once on a group camping holiday, one of the girls with us made me pour away a sinkful of soapy dishwater I'd just run because there was a spider in the water. Or rather, there had been one in there, I fished it out and she was still insistent that I use fresh water.

Remember it well !

Still do it to annoy the missus or show my appreciation of a nice meal, mother in law does`nt like it though.

Had a nice cottage pie and veg at Dobbies restaurant near Kings Lynn the other day, I was itching to lick the gravy residue off the plate 🙂

Burn any knife used to cut raw meat in the BBQ at the end. Just the metal part, obviously.

we use baby wipes for maybe wiping a knife, shopping board or plates that have had something like a sandwich on. Wouldn't use them for proper clean up after cooking a meal or cutting meat or fish though.
