Hi
Any recommendations for caravanning in the new forest?
Involving cycling,walking.
Where?
Thanks in advance.

I'm off to Black Knowl Caravan Club site soon which is near Brockenhurst, not been before but Caravan Club sites are usually high standard.
I can recomend not going to Holmsley Campsite (especially at Bank Holiday), we had the misfortune to go there a couple of years ago and it was terrible (and expensive)

Not been in so can't actually recommend the site, but I ride past THIS often enough

Within a couple of miles walk of 3 or 4 pretty nice pubs (shoe, lamb, cuckoo, rockingham) probably fairly quiet as it's not in the main tourist bit of NF.

It's on one of the wiggle road routes and there's decent off-road close by (for the NF that is - very non-technical). Most off-road is not actually permitted, though the Fritham-Frogham or Fritham Godshill routes are actually not bad, for gravel paths. The non-permitted bits are riding very nicely just now - so dry !

Not so far from Sandy Balls either ! (you can ride there via deadman's hill and burnt balls for a true comedy wild-west storyline)

A group of us also stopped on Holmsley over a BH weekend, expensive and way too many people for the poor facilities on offer, Not good, stay clear.

Also have a look at the Red Shoot Camping Park which adjoins a very good pub and is slap in the middle of one of the nicest bits of the Forest.

Or how about Bashley if you want all mod cons, plus quite close to the beaches too.

Or there's always Ashurst Campsite which is just up the road from me. I'll even show you round the best local cheeky trails for a pint in the Happy Cheese after!

good call on red shoot, 40mpg - From riding past the pub I've always assumed it was ded busy & therefore 'orrible but, again, never been in.

If the site & pub are good, then it's a major winner - Appleslade is bloody lovely

Not being biased of course, Avon Tyrrell between Bransgore and Burley villages. There's about 300 cyclists staying at the moment for this http://newforestrallycc.org.uk/ and the www.bigbikebash.co.uk is on the August bank holiday weekend if you like your beer and music as well as bikes

I think I have stayed at all of them at some point. Redshoots is probably my favourite but I have never been there when it is at peak capacity.
Sandballs is ok, I don't have kids but I expect it would be good for them as there are lots of facilties.
Of the camping in the forest sites, Ashurst is my favourite. I used to love the Happy Cheese. The last time I went it had brand new owners and the beer was poor. Hopefully that has all been sorted.

The Red Shoot site looks nicely laid out and I have never seen it look too busy

I like the look of http://tomsfield.com near Godshill/Sandy Balls, but have just noticed it says no caravans so is no use to the OP

Just outside the forest near Alderholt is a couple of CLs (so you need your own loo) and one that allows open fires (if you ask first and follow his instructions) and is right next to travel tracks heading into the forest

This place also looks nicely laid out; http://www.hillcottagefarmcampingandcaravanpark.co.uk

Actually the more I type the more I realise there are loads!
