Prices in the teens and upwards for hardly any amenities and extra for dogs 😮
Has anyone any recommendations of sites that aren't a ripoff and are pooch friendly around Barmouth area? Or any sties that give prices openy on their site without having to phone them?
Things have changed since i last went to a campsite!
Cheers for any help 😉

Prices in the teens

In the teens and upwards is pretty much par for the Welsh course.

Two campsites we enjoyed in that approximate area are Tyddyn Llwyn (Porth Maddog) and Riverside Camping (Caernarvon). Neither wins on cheapness, though.

It seems None are winning on cheapness any more Camo, so much for a cheaper way of hollidaying Eh!
And from what i can remember Tomthumb i paid 13 quid for a lovely site somewhere down St austell way, but like i said "things certainly have changed" and why do so many of these sites not advertise their prices?

Prices have gone up steeply since about 2007.

Increased demand as a result of the economic sh!tstorm has given campsite owners the confidence to up their prices... 🙁

we have just started a campsite this year and struggled to set a price, we decided to keep things simple and charge a one off £20 per pitch which includes dogs / awnings shelters etc. This was based on looking around. We are thinking of charging £20 for the first and reducing to £15 after the first night.

Would appreciate any feedback from campers.

It's still very cheap compared to any other accommodation. We'll be spending 5 nights in North Norfolk on Bank Holiday week for £85 (inc hook-up). And within easy walking distance of the beach!

Nah - keep it at a flat rate per night. People will pay £20 if its a nice site with decent loos and showers.

I also prefer sites that charge a bit more and don't cram people in at busy times.

Dti - that sounds ok if you are joining the band of campsites that don't allow one/two night stays - makes touring in a campervan a pain in the arris.

Ooh, that's my home area dti... my ads aren't showing Mid Wales campsites - unless you're really 'Bromak - training courses for the construction industry'. I'm curious - Where's the site?

Yea but for 20 per night personally i would expect a lot more than a field with toilets and showers,
And Dti i do like the idea of cheaper consecutive nights rates, its thought like that which would make me want to stay longer, (i absolutely hate the idea of being ripped off) by blatant profiteering.
Dti, me n the missus are going to check your site out now 😉

Loving the site dti (but then I am an absolute sucker for glamping interiors)!

Is £20 too expensive? I guess it depends on your local market and if the demand is there for the (lovely) wilds of Machynlleth. We stayed recently in the Caernarvon area at a site with children's play areas, a shop etc for less than £20 a night... Nice MTB incentive, though!

dti - I'd add some pics of your loos and showers. Or people may think of a composting loo stood on its own in the corner of the field. Nothing wrong with that of course, but I wouldn't pay £20 for that kind facility.

And a photo of your pitches from a different angle to show they are flat. I know in your text is says they have been leveled, but in the current photos it looks like they are on a sloping hillside which would put me off.

Dti...a fire pit on each pitch is a winner. We stayed on a site in Scotland that had a large steel wheel on each pitch with a grid so you could have a BBQ or a campfire. And picnic bench, I always make beeline for a pitch with somewhere to sit/lean the bike 🙂

I'd echo Lawmanmx's OMGaaaaaaaaawd for Cornwall... I guess it's still the cheapest accommodation you'll find there (unless you say with my Mum and Dad, that is 😉 )... but seriously, I'd choose to camp in Pembrokeshire or Anglesey instead at that price. Same cool beaches, less Rick Stein.

Dude, where's that? Sounds like it's spitting distance to Whitesands Beach?

Shouldn't be too far to Aberdyfi, Borth and Tywyn...

Small shops go down really well, too, if you don't have one already, dti

Doesn't need to be fancy... as long as there's sweets from yesteryear in big plastic containers, it's a winner!

Can also be very reasonable too.

Recently paid (ie during first week on school holidays) £15.50/£19 for 2 adults and one child without/with electric, £1.50 for another child.

Really nice site too, it's one of our regular place when down that way.

+1 for firepits - big logs around them for seats - Llyn Gwynant do steel fire pits which are great until some knobs pinch three or four - they only stipulate that you buy their logs which are a little more expensive than normal nets but hey, they bring them to you. I guess they have some kick back from the log man. They also ban any radio/stereo and only allow acoustic music which adds to the atmosphere [/ageinghippy]

We had fire pits and logs in Yosemite and it makes the evenings brilliant fun.

Excellent Campsite on Lac d'Annecy, Rhone Alps - €18pn

Not right IMO.

I agree with the OP that inflation does seem to have pushed prices up since my youth! But you should be able to find somewhere decent in North-Mid Wales for about £12-15 per night in August for a small tent, car and 2 adults. Around Barmouth, have you considered across the river estuary at Fairbourne? Or there is Cae Du further south (a bit remote, but definately allows dogs and camp fires by the beach, was about £15 per night last time we went). Look on ukcampsites and pitch-up. We have also stayed at Hafodd Dwyll which was nice (by a stream and old woodland) and ideal for walking up Cadair Idris but a drive from other amenities. It's very basic but I would consider it cheap.

Last couple of places I've been to in mid-season have been £15 per night, standard tent, no electric 2 adults.

Last year I rocked up to Hollands Wood in New Forest .. for the same 'deal' was £50 for 2 nights looks like they may have changed it now but I think I paid a surcharge coz I didn't book in advance 😐

I recently went to the national downhill champs and camped 3 days 2 nights, just a field with toilets cost £5 for the whole weekend friday lunch till sunday eve, i just dont see any reason (other than profiteering of course) that basic feilds with a loo should cost much more than this, obviously if its like a little holliday camp it would be justified in charging appropriately, im just a little vexed at how expensive everything is getting in these difficult times of "austerity" ... Hate that word.
Just ignore me, i have a headache, Lol 😉

That's dangerous thinking there, fella

There's no reason why a can of coke should cost more than a quid... but them's the breaks.

Sellers/service providers don't charge what the item/pitch costs them... they charge what they can get away with.

Seditious talk? Maybe.

We like to think we're independent decision-makers with an eye for a bargain, but in truth most of us are getting royally bent over every time we pull out the credit card. 🙁

Dti,

The site looks nice but the restriction on arriving before 7 means that its a non starter for me, I couldn't get there before 7 from Shrewsbury of an evening unless I was having to leave work early. Kinda makes weekends away impossible then.

Oh and the links aren't too clear.

We paid £19 a night for the first week of the school hols in Devon; we normally camp at sites charging £3-7 a night but with a 14 month old we decided a little more comfort was required! And to be fair the extra facilities (a freezer and family bathroom etc.) and 'niceness' was probably just about worth it. Charging those prices still didn't deter a family load of oiks coming down from Brizzle for the weekend though 😕

Looking at campsites in Europe you appear to get far much more for your money.

Cheers,
Jamie

We've just come back from a week camping in Cornwall, two of us for seven nights, £112 done.

http://www.southpenquite.co.uk/

It's absolutely fantastic place to stay, very family orientated (we don't have kids BTW) with lovely amenities.
Quite remote but in a beautiful location with a fantastic pub just down the road in Blisland.

Been 3 times now and can't wait to go back.

My caravan is left on a camping and caravan club site just outside Redruth, when we are there it costs £13 per night inc. electric for 2 + awning, our dogs are free. Small "certificated" site which means only a max. Of 5caravans or camper vans at a time. One shower and loo (free) and 10mins from beaches at Portreath and Porthtowan which is
great for an early morning surf so I can leave the mrs in bed. Same price all year too. my daughter,s there at the moment with 2 kids and partner for £17 a night.

Isle of Lewis camping on the beach at Cnip was £11 a night for a motorhome for a family of 4. Only showers and toilets but the beach location was priceless.

But more generally its about £20 with a hook up. Shell Island was a little more but no hook up

Me the missus and our dog did a 4 night bank holl weekend stay near Pwllheli for £6 per night all in, it had toilets (cleaned a couple of times per day) a basic shower, washing up sink, use of freezer and allowed camp fires, oh and a lovely 10 min walk from the beach (all be it a very pebbly one) ... It was basic but just what we want and was happy to pay 🙂

VW T2 camper - I begrudge paying "by the pitch"...
All I want is a shower, trails and the corner of a field.
Last weekend in the New Forest only place I could get was "allocated pitches" so even though the footprint of my camping area required was the size of a family car i.e. a Small camper, I was paying the same as the Clampets who managed to cram in 2 family tents, 3 cars, 7 people and a gazebo for the same price..
Bit annoying at £30 per night - everything was lovely on the site and would return if I couldn't find anywhere else.
Why are campsite owners raising prices ??
Basically because they can...
Know a couple of farm/pub sites where I can pitch up for a fiver but they are (of course) in the north, my old stomping ground.

If you think it's expensive here never go to Italy.

There are exeptions but 30 euros plus for 2 people a small van and no electric is pretty much standard.

^^^ A good source indeed but I tend not to use t`internet listed sites as everyone and his dog uses ukcampsites and similar meaning they get familied out. Much prefer a deserted basic site, usually a farmer making a few quid and doesn't want the hassle of cleaning bogs twice a day to keep his ratings up - sadly getting harder to find these days ...

Bont Fechan campsite is just past Criccieth in North wales (between Pothmadog and Pwllheli, not far from the hills and close to the beaches, basic but only £6 per night for a big family tent 2 adults (allegedly) and our dog ... Bargain! its got toilets/sink/shower and freezer facilities

nr Barmouth always camp at Garth y Fog, Arthog. Between £7 and 10 a night. Basic, just toilet and pay shower I think, yet nicely positioned, interesting pitches, some sheltered by drystone walls, good views and excellent jump off for Cader idris rides, or bridleways/rupps over hills thru forest and moor twrds yet more unpronounceable villages and hills. Just how I like it. Saw a buzzard and an osprey having a mid air battle right there. Don't see that everyday!
