Anyone got any knowledge of early 2000s Renault Masters? Looking at a couple of conversions.
Mainly interested in common faults/major failure points e.g. do they rot and if so where, what are the weak/show stopping mechanical and electrical things you'd look for?
Also anyone have any knowledge of installing a pad eye for a dog harness through a van floor so it's suitably strong and any legislative needs I'd need to deal with?
I converted a 2006 Master minibus 5 years ago.
Pros
Galvanised so don't rust
The bits I did work really well
Lots of space, lots of glass, lovely place to spend a day
Cons
The bits Renault did...
Since I had it, it's needed rear brake callipers (handbrake connection seizes), gearbox rebuild, several wiring issues mainly related to fuel cut off which is "annoying", brake pipe leaks at the joints, fuel sender issues (cuts the engine out), glow plug issues, some of the dashboard lights randomly cut out, and fuses blow pretty regularly. It's only got 100k miles on the clock, but it costs me at least a grand a year in Renault related repairs.
For a dog restraint, I put an eye into the bulkhead I put in between the "boot" and the seating area. But there's no problem going through the floor except you could compromise the insulation and you need to ensure you drill from the bottom so you don't go into any pipes or the fuel tank!
Thanks that's really helpful. 🙂
