The missus has decreed that we need to get the van fixed up a bit for next year. Can anyone recommend a good place to get the following done to a T5:
New rubber roof seal
Fix hole in roof tent caused by lack of roof seal
New side windows
Eberspaecher service
Replace bust springs on bedseat
New fridge ( preferably a top loader, so some joinery needed too)
Many thanks
There's a really good conversion specialist in Glossop, erm, AJC:
We had a scout round a few years back when we were considering some mods to ours and their stuff looks great, plus a mate had a full beans T5 conversion done by them the other year and it's excellent. Don't know if they'd have capacity to do what you want, but worth a call.
Thanks Dog ( always wanted to say that!)
I'll phone them next week.
I'm assuming everywhere will be stacked but hoping they can before summer.
These lads did my side window on the Trafic. They did a great job and were *really* cheap.
+1 for AJC.
They were on 3 months waiting time last time I was in contact with them (April) which was pretty good. You might still be lucky...
Sj campers kendal might be worth a shout too
AJC are an established setup with a good reputation. Be aware, theres LOADS of places that have sprung up in the last few years who call themselves "conversion companies" who do nothing more than create "me-too" conversions by cutting in windows, some insulation and chucking the same flat pack furniture into vans. So much so, the place who built my van actually closed up shop as so many new places had popped up locally who were doing conversions for so much less (albeit using inferior parts). AJC from what I know definitely aren't like that - they'll do custom stuff for whatever the customer wants.
Another option local'ish to Manchester is Exploria Campers in Brighouse. Very good place who have done some work on my van in the past and wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.
Camper Kong fitted the poptop roof on my Trafic. Really good guys, I'd definitely recommend them.
Whats wrong with your fridge? I had problems with mine, thought about replacing it but they are £600.
I pulled it out and took it to a fridge engineer. They tapped it and re filled the gas for £130. It's been spot on ever since. Fridges don't like not being used and shuck around. The gas also lubricates it. 9 times out of 10 campervan fridges stop working due to lack of gas. Either from lack of use or a leak. Only problem is you don't know which so its a £130 risk which might not work.
I'd give the local caravan repair companies a call, they will be able to do most of the repairs and might not be as busy in winter as campervan convertors.
Good luck
Whats wrong with your fridge?
The shit VW windows.
I did get someone to repair it a few years ago and he sort of gave up half way through. Said it was rusted to **** and wouldn't work properly. I think it worked intermittently after that but then not at all.
The fridge, and indeed the van, is 16 years old.
He tried to fix it through the ventilation panels from outside the van. Probably best if I get someone to take it out properly and do the job properly. But will see if they can repair rather than replace.
Both sliding windows are currently sealed up with silicone stuff. The VW sliders are such pieces of shit. I could see that the doorside one was leaking, but didn't appreciate that the one on the other side was even worse 15 years of rain running down into the fridge area.
Has also knackered the floor slightly.
