[Closed] Camper/not a camper insurance....

Converted my T6 ages ago from a commercial van to a camper with a view to having it reclassified to a camper when finished. This looks unlikely now (unless they have a fixed "high top" I understand) so I just need to insure it as an expensive commercial van.

These things go for big money now (parked recently next to a guy who had paid £42k for a professionally done SWB Transit one...) so I need to make clear the mods and incorporate them into the value of the van.

Suspect there are quite a few in this position so what do others do and any recommendations for good providers??

Thanks

Call Adrian Flux, we've used them on a self-converted T5 for years, they're well used to 'non-standard' stuff.

Yeah, Adrian Flux are well versed in partial conversions.

We've declared the van conversion and towbar with Admiral. No extra cost.

Admiral

They have a "Converted/Part Converted Motorhome" as a standard modification option

Yeah the V5 camper thing is total nonsense, it only serves to help police identify the vehicle in traffic and has nothing to do with insurance (source:DVLA website). Find it quite funny how people will cover the sides of their vans in horrible cringey eBay ‘off on an adventure’ compass/mountain stickers just so they can change something on the v5 that has zero significance

I have a self converted van insured as a camper, all disclosed to insurance company who just wanted a couple pics of the inside to sign off that it was converted and not just a mattress chucked in the back of a work van

A Plan brokers for my T6. Conversion (inc. Windows and Roof), alloys, stereo, sidebars, towbar etc all declared as modifications. Agreed value, limited miles policy for van being garaged with Thatcham tracker and its less than £300 a year which I felt was fine.

Currently with NFU for a partial conversion.

For me they've been cheaper that Adrian Flux and Brentacre and easier to deal with and nothing in the T&Cs of the alternatives make me feel there a better shout.

Don’t break down if you have Adrian Flux insurance - their ‘breakdown’ service is useless. I was left stranded in a lay-by in the Cotswolds overnight. Called them initially at 3pm, truck finally turned up at 9pm (from Wales) and then couldn’t do anything.

I found Adrian Flux very pricey. Shield Total insurance in Essex (online or phone broker) are who I used for 10 years of having a van. Just Kampers are probably worth asking too. They often have an offer or competition entry if you ask them to quote so nothing lost.

Lifesure are the ones I’m using

I pay about £350 but have 4 named drivers, one of which being my mrs who went though a phase of driving into parked cars recently

One day I’ll be old enough to get below £200 on my insurance 😀

Maybe the mrs will even have learned to drive by then

Adrian Flux here and last year the renewal was the same price, this year it dropped a bit (possibly due to new rules preventing better deals for new customers)

It doesn't need to be commercial insurance, it's still a camper if it meets their definition.

They also sell an Agreed Policy Add-On, I haven't taken it out but it's tempting to ensure there is no quibbling over market value of a van versus market value of a DIY campervan.
