"Cognitive decline of type 1 diabetics"

Or is Theresa May, starting from such a high point, that we are comfortable with her leading the country.

Speaking as a Type1 myself...

Ken Clarke caught on camera ridiculing Tory leadership candidates

Ken Clarke knows exactly what he is doing.

I now think the talk of Corbyn being un-electable can now be quietly shelved. Considering the choices in the tory leadership contest? Which of them is electable? ehhh, mmmmm, aaaahhh....

That's the point though isn't it? They don't have to have to appeal to the general electorate, they only have to be selected by the party. Then hand over the mess to whoever replaces Corbyn - or potentially a LibDem government.

Well there's something which I didn't expect to hear for a while.

You do realise that they are down to 8 seats and need to win at least another 318 seats to form a government, don't you ?

so the tories are playing a long game and thinking about 2025 here? you're going to have to convince me a little more on thst yin!

Though I can see the tories getting punished for all this nonsense, guess that may be the only good thing to come out of it all. Labour do really need to get their act together, and sharpish, though how sharp is up for debate, I guess the tories know they've made a monumental mess of things. So i really can't see them doing the honourable thing and holding an early election.

Full breakdown of results

Out of 329 Conservative MP votes:

Theresa May - 165

Andrea Leadsom - 66

Michael Gove - 48

Stephen Crabb - 34

Liam Fox - 16

Looks like it's going to be Theresa May. A sensible choice for the Tories and Labour's toughest opponent imo.

Agreed. Tories aren't daft, they will pick a candidate to give them the best chance of winning in 2020. Leadsom is too risky a choice, not experiemced enough. Gove couldn't win a GE - I am surpised he got 48 votes, far too soon for Crabb.

Also May was one of the Ministers thought quite likely to campaign Leave before coming down on Cameron's side but generally keeping out of the campaign

Ken Clarke looks all over the place there. Tories biggest EU supporter really needs to admit the game is up

Some of them wanted to leave the EU, so they've involved us all in their massive bun fight, are now voting for an MP who wants to stay in the EU as our PM, which solves ..?

the evidence, as they say, points to the contrary. 🙄

Well I wouldn't over emphasize their collective wisdom after all they chose the self-proclaimed "quiet man" IDS as their leader, and also Michael Howard of whom Ann Widdecombe famously said "there is something of the night about him", we all knew what she meant.

Well, to repeat the point, technically I think you'll find that the electorate agreed with them.

Imagine, politicians carrying out the will of the electorate in a democracy - who would have believed it ?

(edit: apologies if, as a sometime Labour party supporter, you're uncomfortable with this radical concept 😉 )

Your opinion that Corbyn harms the Labour Party is well known jambalaya, but I'm surprised you appear to feel that Gove is similarly harmful to the Tory Party.

Gove is on the right of the Tory Party and very much opposed to the EU, what is it about him that you dislike so much ?

That stuff stirring up loads of resentment toward Turkish immigrants coming to the UK, when he knew perfectly well that Turkey joining the EU is as likely as England winning a major football tournament.

The problem isn't a lack of integrity. The problem is that he's absolutely insane!!! Completely hatstand meep meep bonkers. Wibble!

While education secretary, he gave a copy of the bible, to every school in the country, with a forward by himself!

Just stop and have a think about that for a moment. A bible. With an introduction by himself. Just inwardly digest that. Read that sentence again......

While education secretary, he gave a copy of the bible, to every school in the country, with a forward by himself!

He thought it appropriate to give out the word of god, but prefaced with his own thoughts, by way of an introduction

You may want someone who thinks that kind of thing appropriate in charge of the country? Personally I think they should be heavily medicated, to try and treat their narcissistic personality disorders and messiah complex, and kept away from the rest of us thanks

Well, pushing academy schools when he was at the education department, even though internal studies showed they didn't work, and it's now pretty clear the benefits are marginal at best, and at worst they're outright dangerous and ill-thought through.

But because ultimately he's a journalist, a good story trumps tiresome facts.

[img] [/img]

EDIT: shameless quote from Wikipedia:

At its 2013 conference, Gove was criticised by the National Association of Head Teachers, whose members condemned the "climate of bullying, fear and intimidation" they said he had created during his time as Education Secretary

Why not mention Turkey in the Referendum ? Politicans have been falling over themselves to cosy up to them and their EU membership, visafree travel etc. If Turkey is so unlikely give us a binding referendum on each new country.

The Leave campaign messaging was no better/worse than Remain.

Knifing Boris was a competitive move, is that a lack of integrety ? It was a surprise to me as I thought he had accepted he personally could not win and so would gomwith Boris as his best shot.

Letting his mrs write for the press 😯 Surely that shows an open mindedness, are ministers husbands/wives supposed to just sit at home.

I get people don't like him and I can't see him appealing to the electorate at a GE but he's as much of a what you see is what you get politican as anyone.

Thought you guys would like that one! 🙂

Actually, whilst I do agree with much of what is written...I do feel from limited knowledge that he believes completely and utterly what he says and backs it up with deeds. Therefore he has integrity. For example, my take on the Boris knifing was that following the shock result, he quickly realised Boris wasn't up to it, or didn't want it and took the only action possible, which was to back up his rhetoric with standing for the position to see it through. Have we done this:

Seeing as the Tory party is about to head out to the wilder UKIP-friendly right wing, and the labour party is morphing in to the Socialist Workers Party, it'd be nice to have a centre ground party that normal people could vote for

😆 I think you're too harsh on Corbyn to be honest. You're falling for the media bias. Which is intense, the PLP obviously have their pals in the media and well a labour revolt suits the tories just fine.

Corbyn would probably be quite effective with the backing of the PLP.

There needs to be a split.

If Turkey is so unlikely give us a binding referendum on each new country.

You might want to Google "representative democracy" and jump back in when you have a clue.

I'd say that the EU delegating decision-making to national referendums at this point is as likely as ... well ... as likely as Boris and Gove painting something truthful on the side of a bus.

I think that is pretty fair - the language he uses - comrades, referring to our friends from hezbollah, the way he dresses, it's all stereotypical SWP type stuff like you see around the student union bars being angry all the time and banging their fists against the bar.

When I was at Cardiff (time of Scargill) a tory politician was coming down to the great hall in the students union for some big debate - BBC cameras where there, etc.

There was a guy selling socialist worker at the side of the stage.

Before it all started, but with a full crowd in the hall, a guy named Lance, who wasn't wearing his usual Barbour type garb, went up and bought a copy, then stepped up to the centre of the stage, lifted the paper up and proceeded to tear it into halves in front of the mostly rabid left wing students.

Obviously it all went off then and the debate/whatever-it-was never happened. Made the BBC Wales news though.

Apparently Corbyn has decided that hezbollah are not his friends because they ARE anti-semitic.

Allegedly what changed his mind was that someone from the PLP actually got out the hezbollah constitution and read him the relevant sections.

But its a perfectly reasonable mistake to make .. for years .. despite being told over and over again .. something that hezbollah are really proud of .. so much that they wrote it down for everyone to see.

FFS! If you're going to criticize him at least do it properly. There are many problems with Corbyn, and his mates in momentum, but to write them off as socialist workers is a pretty lazy tabloid-esque analysis.

His latest piece in the grauniad is actually pretty good. It offers a sensible analysis of the brexit vote and what should happen next from a left-progressive viewpoint. Not very socialist worker really. If it was he'd be calling for a general strike by now.

a story did pop up on my google now about the PLP scarpering around trying to find out who actually owns the name of the labour party and the assets, the leader or general secretary or something. My guess is they didn't like what they found, hence their sheepishness of late.

He really should just sack them all. by elections galore, why not, democracy seems to be the in thing, lets go for it see what happens.

I would guess that the majority of the public vote for their favoured politicians based upon how similar they are to them, how they dress, how they speak and who they remind them off... way more than their vote being based upon a critique of their proposed policies etc....Nigel Farage being a prime example.

So we choose our leaders according to how they dress?

he definitely chooses his clothing to fit in with his political leanings, the hat in particular.

from his black Leninist cap to his ever-present beard, there is something of the stage proletarian about him. His keen lack of vanity is its own kind of pretension. “He is the only man I know who buys his clothes at the Dalston Co-Op,” as another Islington activist waspishly put it to me.

The tories (the party in government) are tearing themselves apart

They're really not though, are they? Asking which Tory leader you get out of that shower of *s is all fairly academic. They're all on the same mission. Its not like any one of them is likely to suddenly discover some previously dormant social conscience, and humanity, is it? Some heartfelt empathy with the working classes? A burning desire for social justice?

Now they're unconstrained by the whole Europe thing, and don't have an opposition worthy of the name, they'll all unite in their goal of bending us all over, and going in dry.

What would be funny, if it wasn't so tragic, is listening to all the prospective PM's banging on about equality and opportunity, and governing for the many not the few, when we all know full well, that once they pull the plug on the EU, they'll be having a bonfire of workers rights, and gleefully *ing the lot of us over as they turn the UK into a corporatist neoliberal theme park

A Tory mum's recipe for a perfect British society
Take one cup of Anglo Saxon determination;

Mix with a jugful of Muslim respect for the family;

Stir in a pinch of traditional Asian modesty;

Whisk with two tablespoonsful of military respect for authority;

Serve on a bed of East European work ethic;

And enjoy with a full glass of British belief in the freedom of the individual!

There is a serious point here - we in the so called 'Western civilisations' have so much to learn from other cultures, and they would stand to gain so much by learning from ours. We don't have all the answers - far from it... but nor do any other culture or religion. It's only by mutual respect, a willingness to learn and the courage to live together that we will build a better life for our children.
