I'm going on an epic (for me) bike ride (about a week) with a friend later this year. I'd like to take photos, possibly some video, but not have to continually be stopping to do so. My friend is patient, but I don't want to stretch the limits of his patience and end up not speaking to him ever again.
What would be a good camera to get? I don't want to be fishing my phone out of my pocket and dropping it.
Thanks!
GoPro. Takes stills and video, loads of mounting options chest, helmet, bars etc. Newer ones are voice activated.Very compact, waterproof, pretty robust if you drop it.
Following. Not for a bike project.
Any issues with the wide angle lens?
Yep. Either opt for a GoPro, possibly on a mount or short handle, or a second-hand compact you're not so worried about dropping. I have a Lumix TZ40 that is small enough to fit in a small frame bag/bar bag and can be fished out and used with one hand.
Pick up a lumix camera from CEX or the like. I think the FT range is waterproof - I paid £20 for an FT30 in 2021, though they seem to have gone up in price now. It's easily operated with one hand and has a dedicated "record video" button rather than having to change mode

Wear a camera bag on your rucksack chest strap, assuming you're on MTB and wearing one - if not then put it in your jersey pocket?
The FT30 looks ideal. We had a Kodak waterproof camera (or my son did) and that was just great fun. I always tuck my phone away in my camelbak, so it's a right pain to get out, but I'm not having an 'expensive' phone in my pocket.
Might have to look into one of these as I took very few pictures on our two day Pennine Bridleway ride as weather was mixed and it was a right pain to get the phone out. I'd happily shove one of these in a back pocket.
the zoom is not as good as bigger cameras but it's very compact
whatever those internet bike influencers use. Insta360 One X2? Or the DJI OSMO ACTION 4.
I ended up getting a Dji action 4 as that's what ask the social media cycling influencers we're pushing.
One thing that is a bit annoying is that the android app must be side loaded rather than installed from the play store. Not super happy about that.
Other than that it's fine. It is very handy being able to take photos without having to stop, or juggling a phone while riding.
Battery ran out today just as the interesting stuff started.
Now just need to figure out uploading photos.
If you want to record memories of the trip, mounted GoPro (or similar) with a few spare batteries
if you want to ‘take photos’ (eg stop look at sights and get nice pics of them) then either upgrade your phone or get a digital compact (at whatever price range - if you’re spending loads I’d look at a Sony rx100)
but for ‘capturing the memory’ imo nothing better than a GoPro especially if you have the remote record button. You get footage of the actual ride then! Can be used in the future for bike rides / trips etc. Nice to remember / reminisce over what you saw while riding

Recording video works well - needs a lot of editing down afterwards. Good tip about remote record button, something for Christmas!
