As there are some gifted photographers on here i thought i'd ask for some help with this. We have a new baby daughter and we would like to have a way of recording her as she grows up for memories. We where in town earlier on today and as she was crying and my wife was feeding her i decided to go into the camera shop which we where parked outside of to look at camcorders. Anway the bloke in the shopwas very helpful but he recommended buying a normal digi camera with hd recording capability. He recommended Sony dsc-hx7v or similar for the sort of money i want to spend.

Should i buy one of these camera's or go for a camcorder? Any other recommendations welcomed and thanks for advice offered 😀

decent compact digital cameras have much the same recording quality as most consumer camcorders.

an SLR or bridge camera with HD video would be even better. lots of pro cameramen/film makers shoot with digital SLRs now, only thing they lack is a decent microphone

Agree with Mr Wright, you can get some great results with compact cameras. If you taking footage of kids, something with a flip out screen is good, so all your footage is not 'looking down' on the subjects. Canon G12 would be my choice.

Mrs Grips has a teeny tiny slimline stills camera (Sony Cybershot something) which takes HD video. This really is the best thing because she leaves it in the nappy bag and can shoot short video clips every time Meg does something cute. We've got a massive archive of clips this way, plus a load of nice photos too. After all the best camera is the one you have with you, which in our case is the compact.

We also have a camcorder - it never gets used!

And autofocus whilst shooting - handy for kids running around. Plus they cost three times as much as a compact and are a bugger to cart about. I don't think the OP is looking to remake The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

Thanks all, very helpful. Molgrips i think you've hit it on the head really and it was a Sony cyber-shot thingy that i saw today so thats good. 😀

Will have a look at the Canon too thanks Lodious. Agreed on the SLR's and Bridge cameras, they are too big and bulky to carry around plus you end up looking like a right tourist/keeno with one of them 😯 (Obviously great if you actually can use them properly).

I think the more slimline the better mainly as it'll be the wife that will be using it unless all the exciting stuff happens on the weekends 😉

This is ours - Sony Cybershot T90.

I think there is a slightly later model now that has a cool panorama feature where you press the button and scan the panorama and it makes a long thin picture, like those school photos you used to get.
