I [s]need[/s] want a new camera (Canon 5D mkII if you need to know).

They are still silly money so I was thinking:

1 - how much are they to buy in the middle east? (Long shot but thought someone on here may know)

2 - is there any issues with buying one and bringing it back to the UK?

(My brother in law works out there lots and he could buy it for me).

From what I remember, Canon make two types of camera's. Hong Kong manufactured are high quality and the Middle East is of a lower quality. I read this somewhere, so I could be wrong.

In my experience in Saudi Arabia...things are pretty expensive.

Photography has only recently been made legal in public places (some time in the last 10 years), and people still don't trust it.

I don't think there's a huge market for cameras in KSA...other countries in the region might be ok. I may be going to Bahrain or Dubai at some point in the next couple of months so I'll take a look if I remember.

The Far East would be better, such as Hong Kong. Camera equipment is cheap out there (make sure not too cheap as you don't want a fake). I bought v. cheap memory cards in the camera shop area in HK...they work fine so I'm assuming these were genuine.

My BIL only works the middle east so the far east suggestion isn't an option unfortunately.

He does travel all over though - I guess I should just ask him to take a look the next time he is out there. Sounds like it might be a non-starter though.

If you havent already, I'd look at grey importers like Kerso or HDEW Camera's first...big savings compared to UK stock.

I don't know about the middle east as a whole but in Dubai for example most electrical goods can be bought cheaper on the UK high street.

Well saw him today - coincidentally with a new camera himself, a Canon 1100D, that he got 'reduced from £1000 down to £600' in duty free. Argos sell them for £369.

So I won't be relying on him then...

Electronics don't get substantially cheaper anywhere than online UK or US retailers anyway, do they?
