Trying to track down a camera for my daughters birthday (but to be given as a present by someone else)

She wants a camera but I’m not 100% sure what she wants to do with it, apart from take snaps of things. Budget up to about £100, could go higher for something good

I’m amazed at the price of cameras these days, they’re pretty pricey. Could go second hand but also surprised at the price of cameras even 10 years old. Even thought about an old phone with a good camera but don’t need that functionality (and I don’t want her to have a phone yet)

I was favouring waterproof/shockproof type cameras as they’ll be more robust. Not fussed about brand but don’t want cheap tat.

Any ideas or inspiration?

I don't think you can go wrong with a camera as a present tbh. I'd go for used.

My 10 year old will be getting a phone soon, I do lean towards this.

I like Olympus Pen cameras if you want a 'real' camera. Should be able to get a kit for £100ish

My 10 y/o gas used a Sony RX100 MK1 which is very compact and takes good quality pics.

What do you mean by a pen camera kit? I can only find really expensive stuff...

Saw the instax last night. It's a bit like razors, good value product but the refills aren't cheap. It'll coat us hundreds in the film prints

Our rule for the kids is no phones till secondary school, although I appreciate we are in a minority there (based on their friends at school)

The instax is great fun. You can pick up multi packs of film online for reasonable prices. After a while you’ll find the novelty reduces and the film use goes down.

If you’re after a digital then go for an old camera. I used to have a Minolta X50. It was brilliant. I lost it in a taxi to the NIH in Washington. Replaced it the next day with a Nikon coolpix s6(?) that was 💩. There are always some X50s hanging around on eBay. [edit] thinking now I should just have got one of these instead of buying a new Sony A6400 recently[/edit]

If you must have new then the low end Sony cybershot or canon power shot should be fine. Though for simplicity I’d avoid a zoom I’ve been surprised at how quickly young children get the hang of easy-to-use cameras.

Liking the look and price of that Olympus.

Edit. No viewfinder though? Fine for young ones. Nbg for an old long sighted giffer like me.

My 2 kids have these, but we got them from Fuji direct as refurb or returns or something. So significantly cheaper. Came in a plane box but with all the kit and work perfectly. Looked brand new, definitely not used.
