…and I’m now sat in hospital post op.

I was up in North Wales for the SSUK only to stack it an hour or so before the race.

Friend’s took me to A&E Wrexham took X-Rays and referred me back to a hospital near home. I should have requested a CT there and then but wasn’t really all there.

Dosed up on meds at the local minor injuries my wife made sure I got on and yes, as well as the smashed collar bone I have three rib fractures (upper right back) and 2 cracked vertebrae (transverse processes) lower back.

Had my op on the collar bone last night and hoping to get home today.

Bit pissed off really, especially as we have only 10 days before the house move falls through also.

Bad luck fella, whilst there is never a good time for injuries it does sound as though you timed it for a maximum points haul, just before a house move 😳

Good luck, try not to laugh ...

Ouch, we were also out for a 12 mile pre-race 'warm-up', did you do it on the course or regular trails?

And you just missed the 3 mountain rescue vehicles absolutely crammed full of volunteers that turned up just before the race.

Surprised A&E didn't do a more thorough check, is it normal for them to refer pesky mountain bikers back to their local area without a full assessment?

Yes, on the regular trails. I went just a bit quick in to a few jumps, hand it all under control then well obviously didn 't.

According to triage the get mountain bikers weekly. Perhaps at the time I wasn't fully there and didn't think to as or say key things to provoke the right response. Should be standard no? But you head...CT!

We all know that feeling I think. Just wish you a speedy recovery and you get mobile again soon.

Thanks for the wishes guys.

It's my right side I've smashed and yup I'm right handed. I was thinking of some YouTube channels like project binky and some Lego kits to keep some arm mobility.

Aber gen sent my wife away with a feeble sling and a shrug when her collar bone was smashed in three requiring a plate.

What we all really care about is if the bike is ok?

Unlucky. WE all cop for a bad one every now and again I guess.

My only advise would be invest in an exercise bike and a favourite box set to keep you engaged while you use it - you'll appreciate it once you get back on the bike even though it's purgatory at the time.

Oh, and and absolute must, religiously adhere to any physio program the docs give you.

The Welsh NHS don't like us foreigners. Stacked it on my road bike near Rhyl recently, and rather than go to the local hospital (which is really sh1t), I just patched myself up - probably got a broken rib or two and some nasty cuts, but I'l happy to patch myself up and make if 75 miles home if it happens again.

MIL has been in the hospital in Bodelwyddan and the nurses on the ward said 'you shouldn't be here' after she had a fall at her caravan.

Heal well OP !

I don’t know about the bike yet. I think it is.

But yes physio will be strictly adhered to. I will be going back to a local place to help me with core work out during recovery also.

The Welsh NHS don't like us locals much either. I separated my shoulder and was told it was just a bruise. Across a quarter of my torso.. I won't go into the grim reading that would be my mother's undiagnosed cancer or allowing my youngest daughter to almost die after my wife's waters had broken. These are just the headlines - I don't have much faith in them any more.

(Sorry that was far more negative than I'd planned, but no, it's not just cos you're English! 😀 )

Defo not a Welsh v English thing as the Dr who saw me was neither. More likely a cost and resources divide etc.. But yes if anything has been learnt you must push for a CT scan.

The Royal Berkshire was better staffed and ready for anything, we’ll from this experience of mine.

Back home with a cup of tea now. 👍

Bad luck mate, I smashed three ribs on the right side back at the beginning of april all three were flail type fractures. That was bad enough without your added injuries so hope you heal well!

It was 13 years ago - but I had excellent treatment in the Royal Glamorgan - including an overnight stay and maxillofacial surgery.

Perhaps a little early to be planning recovery, perhaps not. Anyway how do the pros get back cycling so quickly after a collarbone break.

There's a physio just up the road who helps rehabilitate sports injuries and true core so that's a given rather than just following basic guidance. Plan is to consider specific injury recovery with whole body integration.

I guess it'll be the ribs and alone that'll hold me back?

Anyone have any other recovery advice, I don't want to go too quickly and risk damage or slower recovery etc. Although I do need to consider bikes and if I should buy a new one for once.

Ouch. Heal well. I've just had 6 weeks rest after separating my shoulder. Sleeping is a challenge, I found one of those bolster pillows helped stop me rolling onto my bad shoulder. Just started gentle rides.

NHS were OK for me, MIU, had xrays and scans, then help from the doc, but I was a local I guess.

Whoa spot sounds like you took a fair blow to the bod there , did my collarbone end of april this year and some ribs .. surgeons decided not to operate on clavicle and rib was same , dont think it helped much one day leaning onto bit of wood against walk to alleviate pain , it came back tenfold few hours later and was spitting blood next day , i never learn , was off work 2 months in total and really should have been more tbh but self employed .. been back easy trail riding probably 2 month now and easy gym sessions , still clavicle pain depending what im doing , no pullups yet but bench press , curls and rows light weights , best advice , make sure you have plenty shirts , did get sore ass cheeks sittin/ sleeping upright all thd time though …

I went through a phase where the fracture clinic knew me well.

Spent many an hour waiting there.

Had a few stays there too ....
