After a recommendation please.

Any food type, just not stupidly expensive.

Just nice, cosy and small with good food.

Our go-to is the old bicycle shop - foods decent low key stuff, good drinks and friendly & happy staff.

Fancett’s - great small bistro

Fin Boys - fantastic fish

Margret’s - only been open a few weeks, but is meant to be brill. Same owners as Restaurant 22, which is awesome but is more ‘fine dining’ than it sounds like you are after.

If you are happy to head out of town a bit, then Provenance Kitchen in Whittlesford is also a favourite of mine.

We really enjoyed eating at Bedouin on a recent visit.

Thanks all,

Will check those out. The Bedouin sounds instantly appealing.

Second the Wrestlers and Bedouin - both are great.  There's also Sticks and Sushi which is our go-to when we get a night out.

Yim Wah, The Olive Grove, De Luca Cucina & Bar and Curry Garden are all pretty good on Regent Street - they were all favourites at lunch for my company when our head office was on that road.

Not been yet but Buren has been opened by the same people as Steak & Honour, who make the best burgers in town (but I'd not refer to their place as cosy) .

Mercado Central is very good, Chop house is decent too.

I find the Old bicycle shop a bit underwhelming personally, the Petersfield is part of the same chain and I prefer there. I used to love Provenance, last visit wasn't great although it was a while ago so worth checking if you are out of town/mobile. Fancetts is very good, proper French style 2/3 choices per course, but they will be amazingly cooked and prepared.

Trinity seems to have re-opened but under new ownership, it used to be great, but check recent reviews.

Going to Margretts in a week or so and Vanderlyle (again) later in August, but the first I don't have any feedback on yet and the later you'll never get a table unless you plan ahead, it is however, the best food in town!

+1 for the Old Bicycle shop, I quite like Pint Shop as well, its more of a bar but the food is really nice.

Seems to be a pie shop now, so very to different to what Trinity was, and seems a bit disingenuous that they're using the same name to be honest. I used to love Trinity, and the head chef is now at the Burleigh Arms (I've not been).

We both managed to spell Margaret's wrong, for some reason!

Funnily enough I am visiting Vanderlyle for the first time in August, it will need to be going some to beat Restaurant 22 (and Midsummer House) for me, but gains immediate points for being named after a National song.

Interesting how many Michelin star / rated places recommended, that's not my idea of 'not expensive' so maybe OP needs to give a rough budget?

Having said that, Cambridge is expensive to eat out, there are lots of brands/chains a bit mediocre because the tourists only visit once, or places are reliable and can charge more for it. My go-to for mid-range, independent choice would Mill Rd - Limoncello / Bedouin / Al Casbah.

OP whereabouts are you staying and are you happy with pub food or want a restaurant?

Thx again all. @konagirl somewhere quite close to the city airport.

Not after Michelin but some of those do look good, especially that fish restaurant. We only have one night as off to a big family party on the Saturday night.

Bedouin looks to tick all the boxes so we have booked there for Friday evening. Might pop to somewhere like the old bicycle café for Saturday lunch though

Ah that's not the easiest location. If you wanted high end / tasting menu type, the new MJP@TheShepherds in Fen Ditton gets good reviews and would be walkable from Marshalls. But otherwise a taxi into town / Mill Rd would be best, and Bedouin is a good option. Enjoy Cambridge.

Reporting back.

We really enjoyed Bedouin, excellent meal, very busy and glad we booked.

But the stars go to an amazing find. Coconut, a Sri Lankan restaurant, just around the corner from where we are staying, that we only found when picking up the groniad this morning.

Without any question, the best Sri Lankan meal we have had outside of Sri Lanka, and I am pretty well travelled there. Very highly recommended.

Saved for future reference. Reasonably local but rarely eat in Cambridge save the occasional foray to Midsomer House to empty my wallet 😬

Glad you enjoyed, I'd heard good things about coconut, sometimes you find the best things under your own guidance (or that of a national news paper) anyway!

I really did mess up spelling Margret's!

As for mentions of MS house, singularly the most insanely expensive meal I've ever had, also not the best meal I've ever had, so didn't warrant the cost in my experience.
