Looking for help please from the STW-scrum
My eldest son is going into Year 13 next month and is working on a 5000 word Extended Project Qualification as part of his A Level Studies and university application.
The project is focussed on the knowledge and experience of 'Concussion in Grass Roots Rugby' and in order to gather data he is looking for as many people as possible to complete a short questionairre.
If you are a current/ex player, a rugby parent or rugby coach could you spend a few minutes completing the attached 'Survey Monkey' questionnaire.

https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/ZWM2G82

It's completely anonymous and you won't need to give your email address or personal data. Please feel free to share or forward link to others. Huge thanks in advance for helping him out - very much appreciated.

Just tried this, but it got stuck at the end of page 1 and won't progress.

Shame you can’t rebuild this survey: I’m not a parent, player or coach, but am dealing with the aftermath of my FIL’s extensive county rugby career. He’s just gone 70, former hooker and has advancing early onset dementia we suspect from a mixture of genetic predisposition and concussion. Fit as a fiddle, mind of a paranoid child. Two props from his team have recently passed with similar. It’s utterly crap. Rugby can do one.

Reeksy,

Thanks - just tried the SM link and all is working now...

Hot Fiat - I'm sorry to hear about what you're going through, it is awful. He did think about including wider family, but wanted to focus on people currently playing / those involved with them to assess the current level of knowledge and attitude. Early results (about 600 responses) suggest that knowledge of concussion is better than the reaction to it. Hopefully that might change in the future.

Sorry, but that is a very poorly constructed survey. Not sure what answers he is after but the bias seems to be towards experiencing concussion. My son has played league for many years and we have very few positive HIA incidents. I'm not convinced that this survey is very fair. Happy to discuss over DM if needed.

As an ex rugby player, the survey doesn't work very well either. Especially one who is now a rugby parent. I gave up.
Also happy to have a chat by DM. In short. I had a number of concussions while playing, which ultimately led me to play in headgear. Can't remember if I used to train in it. I expect not.

There are a few issues with the survey design, yes. I've spent 20 years designing surveys and it still takes time to refine them. But it's a school project, so fair play to him - i hope he gets some good information from it 🙂

I had a number of concussions too, self-diagnosed as nobody seemed to care 20 years ago. But i'm pretty sure when you see yourself overtaking yourself in the exact same car on the way home from the game, or don't remember which direction your team is heading, forget how lineouts work, etc, there's something not right.

which ultimately led me to play in headgear.

It’s a proven fact that scrum caps are not a defence against head injuries. They were always there to avoid abrasion injuries, encouraging children to wear scrum caps is a false narrative. Proper tackle technique is a better avoidance.

I can’t find the scientific study evidence right now but it was even proven that the false belief of protection was causing players to have even less caution with their heads because of the misguided belief. Here’s two articles, albeit those perhaps have a commercial interest.
