Is the paper white version worth it over the standard one? I don't want 3G and this is my first delve into the murky world of digi-books.
If you're ever going to want to read in poor light it's worth it. It's useful when you want to read but your partner's watching TV, in bed, on planes, when camping etc. That said, I was pretty happy with its predecessor.
I stole the GFs standard one when I got her a paper white. She loves it, because she likes to read in the dark, which she sometimes does till the early hours of the morning without keeping me awake.
For simply reading though, as you would a normal book, under normal light, the standard one is great too. Sometimes you get the urge to use it as a touch screen, as is so intuitive with so many devices now, but that only really comes into play when you have references to click on in text. Other than that you're only turning pages, which the buttons are perfectly positioned for anyway.
I actually started reading a LOT more when I got a Kindle. So it can't be bad.
Agreed on the above. Only if you're going to read in poor light. Otherwise just get the standard one.
I've found the Paperwhite screen nicer to read under all conditions, not just night time reading
got the paperwhite version back in October to replace my old keyboard version. I have to say i think the paperwhite is well worth the extra cash. As durham says - its just better for reading in all light conditions, the contrast is just that bit better when you're reading in daylight, and obviously loads better when its a bit dark. Absolutely perfect for when i'm doing the last feed before bed with my son and the little table lamp is all the light i've got!
I would say the paperwhite is worth it if you want to read in anything other than ample sunlight. Like others, my missis likes to read in bed after lights out (she doesn't have to get up as early as me!), so this is a real benefit for us. In fact she was very anti-kindle. I bought one as I travel a bit. She ended up nicking mine, so I bought one for her own use. SHe'd not be without it now.
Yes, for all the reasons above. One of the simplest, nicest pieces of tech I own or use and the paper white is fantastic.
Cheers for the info folks. First world dilemmas huh?
I prefer my paper white to mrs Coolhandlukes non lighting up version.
I'd not read it in darkness as I find the light a bit uneven and harsh but when reading in normal light situations I always use the light set to about 15-20% .
Hmmmm I see the weight of evidence is falling in favour of the Paperwhite.
I don't read in the dark but then gain I don't have my lounge lit up too much, so the extra brightness may come in handy.
