Cafe near to parliament square

Parliament Square will be full of angry farmers today.

Go behind Westminster Abbey then turn left up Marsham Street. Up there is a few generic coffee shops that you will be ablento nurse a coffee in without being kicked out.

I am not sure what sort of cafe you mean but this is where I would definitely go. It's just the other end of Whitehall and I would describe it as a self-service restaurant really.

It's nice reasonably priced food in a really interesting environment.

For a very traditional cafe vibe which is a bit of a london icon, the Regency Cafe just off Horseferry road.  A bit of a walk from Parliament Square but not too far.  Featured in Layer Cake, Brighton rock and loads of other films and TV series.  More pie and mash than pumpkin spice latte.  Recommended if you want well cooked, simple grub.  Their homemade steak pie is awesome. Or was, TBH it was a couple of years ago that I was last there.

I came to say regency too. It's also in Rocket man (the Elton john film)

Used to love the Regency as worked across the road for years.

Other more sedate laptop friendly cafes are on or just off Victoria street e.g  Starbucks.

As we are on a thread derailment. Worked just around the corner from it, thought it was pretty crap tbh. Just cheap tasting cafe food and a lady who thought shouting all the time equals character. Seemed to be full of people who’d watched layer cake much like the Black Dog in vauxhall is now a swifty pub.

Over the last few years there’s been a marked decline in the number of proper cafes in London (greasy spoons) it’s all ****y coffee shops now.

My London office is on Vic Street and honestly it's a black hole round there for good independent coffee. A nice hipster place could make a mint (or maybe just about cover their rent, which is probably the issue).

The cart in front of Westminster Abbey used to be good, and you could then nip into Deans Yard (total hidden gem) and sit on the grass if it was good weather. But the cart is run by the Abbey now I think and is very non-descript.

Well the Regency is up for sale so I'm sure it will shortly be a hipster sourdough and avocado cafe.

Stutton Ground, excellent food during the lunchtime market. Also a few bakeries, etc.

Short walk but they do amazing coffee and have a lot of space.

I recall a workmate going there shortly after it opened and giving a bad report, but they drink the free Nescafe in the office, so I expect I can take their dislike as a badge of approval.

Cheers for the replies. Interesting that the area is a dearth of decent coffee. Currently in the midst of a career change, and parliamentary adjacent jobs are one possible area of future employment. Absolutely hating London, insane train fares and the lack of decent coffee are pointing me towards other opportunities!
