As in the title, any good experiences/links to self catering accomodation ?

There are so many websites, but not many user reviews of whats on offer.

North of Scotland, suitable for a chilled family experience (can there be such a thing?) in the summer.

ta v much.

We have had some very good and very bad experiences with Scottish holiday cottages over 15 years, even (admittedly some time ago) from the big companies. Our process now is:
1) Google holiday cottages in the area you want
2) Note the directions and check it out on a Memory Map, Google Maps etc
3) Go for something at least STB 3 stars and check it provides towels etc. This last point may seem odd, but in our experience, places that cannot provide towels generally do not have the same maintenance/cleaning regimes as others

Amazingly it still a bit of lottery with these things. We typically look for independants, but don't have kids so our criteria will be a bit different to yours. Agree with the Captain, go for a min 3star, don't pick anywhere that doesn't have good internal pics so you can get an idea of the property.. and phone up and quiz people a bit, it is afterall your hard earned cash/ well earned holiday. May be worth trying:

We've used unique scotland/ecosse unique a couple of times and both places we've stayed have been excellent and very good value for money (although it was off-season). The ecosse unique site has point on the map so useful if you're looking for something in a particular area.

I'll second ART on www.hamstercottages.co.uk; had an amazing New Year at Dorlin Cottage which, facilities and location-wise, was about as good as it gets. The only (supposedly helpful) comment I could muster was that they had not told us quite how nice the cottage actually was; exceeded expectations at every level.

We've just booked for the Scottish Six Day Trial, 1st week in May. Had a week there in July last year & enjoyed it so much, etc. It's 4 miles out of Fort Bill at a place called Muirshearlich, Caledonian canal 50mtrs from your front door & looking at the North face of Benjamins Nevis.

there is someone who posts on here who has some sort of holiday cottages in glencoe. tartanscarf I think it is and he posted a link to his website in the what do you do for a living thread. Don't know what they're like, but I recall the website being quite good. Glencoe of course is spectacular.

This place is brilliant if you like getting away from everything, we even got some nice fresh (read still wriggling and biting!!) sea food thrown in as well. Ian, the guy that runs it and his wife are really nice. Cool as **** place with seals swimming around in the loch.
