Imagine someone was on holiday in a country such as Andorra and bought a pricey item obviously they'd have to pay whatever costs to bring it back into UK but what taxes would they pay at time of purchase? I was planning a website and the difference being based in Andorra or UK or European country was €1000. Why this difference?
Who'd check?
Just take it back. If it's a frame from Commencal or a bike, cover it in mud 'had it for 12 months mate'
I wasn't planning a website I was playing on one. Obviously it's taxes but what does the physical shop do with the £1k if there's separate prices to pay across the counter or is this difference just website based?
Yeah that was a whole other internal discussion.
I don’t really get what ‘planning a website’ means.
but… if you buy it there, you will pay local taxes. They in theory will only not charge you taxes if you can prove you have paid the UK duty.
well that’s what Raaw told me, as I was hoping to pay tax free and collect it, for me to ‘declare’ it upon my return to the uk.
turns out that’s a no go.
just find out which of your friends voted brexit and get them to make up the difference 😂
VAT in Andorra is 4.5%
The seller of an item for export should deduct this from the price (online sales for instance. For stuff purchased there you can reclaim the VAT at the airport. In theory, in reality it's a faff and there's minimum limits and things) When it arrives in the UK you will get charged UK VAT of 20% (the shipping company will do this. If you bring it in yourself you should declare it the airport...) Depending on the value of the item that could be a €1,000 difference. If you bought it from Germany (19%) or Sweden (25%) you the difference would be smaller or the other way around
That makes sense and was kind of what I thought. Now to decide whether it's worth the hassle and having to potentially build a bike from a rolling chassis on day of arrival.
How old / well used does something have to be before it’s not new?
I brought a bike back from Spain last week, all boxed up in a cardboard box from a local bike shop. Put box on trolley in portrait style on trolley, wouldn't fit through customs doors, the narrow channel you have to walk through...so had to faff about getting it through. Anyway, I think it's deliberate so they can have a look see if you look guilty. Mine was obviously used and they didn't look v interested, despite the box looking new and having orbea written along it.
