I have recently bought an item from the states (half the price of the same item in the UK) and although it was delivered to the UK in 3 days it has since been sat waiting for "customs clearance" for 6 days.
Any idea how long this "customs clearance" can take?

THe longer it's in customs means its going to cost more. 😉
It usually takes a day or two but I have heard of it making it to the local Parcel Farce depot with no notification and its awaiting your collection( and fee). Try chasing it up.
Importing stuff can be hit and miss.
If you are VAT registered and have an EORI number and have made all the right preparations in advance it can make it easier.
