Ouch! spices are expensive. So I figured that I'd buy paprika 'in bulk' (a whole 100g) to save a few pennies. I'm not after anything esoteric, just normal paprika. Does anyone have any suggestions?

You can get bulk in Sainsburys - in the speciality ethnic foods section, with the giant bags of rice and Polish sweets.

Otherwise, I bought a giant bag from Amazon.

I wouldn't go bulk, it'll be tasteless red powder in a few months.

Wee tins of the Spanish stuff from Sainsbury are ideal size for me, still pungent enough toward the end.

Smoked paprika is a staple for chillis, fajitas etc. Regular paprika essentially makes things orange.

TK Maxx/Home Sense (or whatever it's called) often have spices a lot cheaper than supermarkets. I got some saffron which was about an 8th the price of Morrisons.

I use a place think it's called spicesontheweb or similar. A decent choice of different chillies etc. Last time I bought a big bag of smoked paprika, made an awesome chilli brisket following suggestion from someone on here.

Try your local Asian food shop. Usually much cheaper for big bags of spices.

If you're anywhere near sheffield - Lembas is a good option for bulk buying of decent stuff ton of paprika anyone?

Not sure why they have a description of pepper - but it's definitely paprika

Isn’t there a local market you can use ? Any Arabic or Indian (not sure they’ll have paprika) focused ones nearby you, they’ll do bags of spices for a fraction of super market prices. I wish I’d seen this earlier or we could have bought you a bag at the weekend from the spice seller in the Paris market we use.

Will look for an online option

Cheers folks. West Wales isn't the most cosmopolitan of places. However, Number 1 Son lives in Cardiff. 😉

I use Amazon and eBay so far all have been good. I use make at least one curry a week and another dish with spices in. So with that the spices don’t go old and stale. It would cost a fortune at supermarket prices.

Just as cougar states, its only worth getting the hot smoked Spanish paprika in my opinion as others just have no kick or much flavour.
We get the 120 gram tins from amazon which last about 6 to9 months

People always used to say that Hungarian is better than Spanish. The wholefood shop in town (Aber) used to sell some loose and when they took the lid off the jar it would fill the room with sweet aroma. The stuff they sell now isn't nearly as good. No recommendations but maybe search for a Hungarian one on ebay.

Wouldn't say it's hideously expensive. Saffron on the other hand. More expensive than cocaine, even gold! 😀

I can recommend La Chinata - the hot one is my favourite.

Ask for a bit of each variety - Dulce, Picante and I think there's another one.

Talking of spices and stuff. I can never get whole nutmeg in the supermarket, always sold out. Ground yeah but that's not fresh. #firstwoldproblem

A 70g tin last us about 18 months, and we use paprika at least once a week in food.
Living in Hounslow does have its benefits in terms of buying herbs and spices - Quality Foods! although I haven't quite plucked up the courage to buy Amaltas

Which is a compliance thing, and absolutely nothing to do with how the stuff will taste by then.

Having lived in Hungary I’m biased but this is the real deal...

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B01M0LM313/ref=pd_aw_fbt_325_img_3?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=J82VSRVENXWW8N8D51VQ

If you shop around, look for paprika from Széged in Hungary. Édes means sweet and Csípos means hot.

Ambrose, my wife went to Hungary a few weeks ago and brought back about a ton of it. Do you want me to bring some with me on Saturday? (I genuinely need to get rid of some!)

Don't know if cheaper but I usually buy a pack of tins of El Avion smoked hot paprika from Amazon (think was five for a tenner, lasted years)

Best I've tried. So smokey, aromatic and fresh/deeply-coloured it put me off buying any other paprika as now no chilli or goulash can be without.

Nice tins also, keeps it fresh. Try not to buy bulk in one big container and the stuff goes tasteless after long storage unless you divide and vacuum seal smaller portions
