I'm trying to buy a 2nd hand iPhone for my daughter (and probably for me too).
Most of the FB Marketplace items i contact either (a) ignore any message, polite though I am in enquiring as to whether it is still available, or (b) seem keen to sell, but postage only.
In my naive view, buying through postage is placing trust entirely on the individual to post the item, with no recourse if nothing is actually received. My requests to do face-to-face purchase (cash!), that will confirm the existence and condition of the item, seem to be met with "postage only".
When queried, i've just had reassurance that I can pay half now and half on receipt, "on my baby daughter's life".
Am I missing something obvious, or are these simply too obviously scams?
try musicmagpie - they offer stuff a little cheaper on their ebay store and will refund if phone doesn't work.
Ah well.
Anyone got an iPhone they are looking to sell?
Must be at least 64gb, so daughter can install Teams etc on it for school.

They’re mostly scammers with that sort of caper. Also I don’t answer any “Is this still available?” messages as 99.9% of the time you don’t hear anything back if you reply. In fact I now put a comment that says “Is this still available?” messages will be ignored. Doesn’t stop the illiterate ones though. 🙄

What do you respond to then?
I'm struggling to get any responses at all.
“Hi, I’m interested in your …. Can I come and view it/I’d like to buy it etc etc.”
I probably wouldn’t buy an iPhone off FB though as others have said there are plenty of 2nd hand outlets. eBay is always worth a look.
If you want an answer just write anything (literate) which shows you intervened personally rather than sending the default message.
And are you clicking through and seeing the seller profiles? You should be able to tell if they are documenting an authentic life which adds up. Choose a seller who is a real local person to avoid scams.
EDIT having said that, iPhone is a very risky marketplace purchase even if you are careful.
I'll do it for 40% deposit. On life of fluffy bunnies and unicorn tears.
I just pay the slight premium and buy from GiffGaff or CEX - had too many scammers and chances on Ebay and wouldn't trust a 'postage only' Facebook ad at all (unless they post it out to me *then* I send the money - but they wouldn't do that would they). I once had someone try to argue that the 'iPhone with box' couldn't be returned because they never claimed that the box wasn't for that particular phone so the phone wouldn't fit in the box! At least Ebay agreed with me.
GiffGaff are slightly more liberal with their 'Perfect' condition (I once had to send one back as it had a scratch on it but at least they exchanged without arguing).
With CEX, if they say it is in 'A' condition it is likely to look pretty much brand new.
+1 for CEX. Buy all our family phones from there as mentioned A = actually like new, and you get a 2 year warranty.

This is the way. Or simply send a number much lower than the asking price with a question mark. That seems pretty common on marketplace these days.
Mrs_oab is moving on her red iPhone SE tomorrow - but the battery is rapidly degrading. £75 for the phone and £75 for a new battery from Apple...?
And does it have to be iPhone?
As ever, ID mobile will do some very good deals which can be cheaper than buying handset...
and you get a 2 year warranty.
TBF, a two year warranty for a child's phone is going to be meaningless (unless you get a bombproof case). At least that is my ongoing experience.

We bought them cases and screen protector.
But the biggest thing we did was refuse to buy a replacement. A few weeks with no phone or having to spend 6 months of paper round money on an average phone taught a powerful life lesson to teens....
What is it with kids and iPhones. Basic Motorola will run teams no problem and as it's new you get an actual warranty. Even the faster g(whatever) are not much over £100 which is going to be less than any iPhone that still has meaningful support from apple.
THanks all
Re - "why iPhone" etc. At her school, all learning is iPad driven, so synching with an iPhone is much easier. She has an iPhone 7+ 32gb, which is on its last legs and doesnt have sufficient storage for the essential apps.
For other children, and mrs XPS, we have provided decent android phones (Motorola G series). £120 odd.
I'm having a look at GiffGaff, given we use them for all the family mobile (SIM only) contracts, and the others as well.
@Matt OAB - DM incoming...
FB is absolutely full of scammers now. Unless it is pick up, then dont even think about buying. Even when picking up, how do you know it is not stolen?
My GF had the same as you, even spoke to the person who was selling, and they said post only as we are 70 miles away. She said we are passing there this weekend, but again, no collection, post only. It’s a scam. Another one was local to us, she even arranged to collect, but got to the house, they didnt know anything about a phone for sale.
Look at the cars and motorbikes for sale now. 2019 cars at £4k. All scams.
CEX is the sensible midpoint between "saving money by buying used" and "buying off some guy in the pub". We've had 2-3 phones and they were all fine.
“on my baby daughter’s life”.
IMVHE 100% of people who say this are lying.
FB is absolutely full of scammers now.
Fleabay too. Just yesterday I enquired about a van for sale an hour down the road, but the seller emailed back to say that he'd moved abroad* so it was impossible for me to view it we'd have to use a vehicle transport firm/escrow company to manage the sale, with me able to look at the van once I'd handed over my money and it had been delivered.
*Scotland 🤣
iPhone 6 any good to you? I just use it as a music player, so would let it go for, I dunno, how much you want to pay?
Its a 6 not a 6s so stopped getting updates a while ago, but battery life seems ok.
Thanks - I've got a 7 which is similarly out of support.
Both mine and hers are no longer able to get the latest OS, and therefore fall foul of my work and her school in the min security device standards to allow access.
I fear that jumping *just* to an 8 will give us the same problem in a few months' time.
Without trying to sound too picky, something like a 10 or 11 feels like cheap enough and still a couple of years of useful life left (battery notwithstanding)
Makes sense 👍
