I have recently bought some stuff from a couple of German retailers normally Paypal it with no thought, however this time i noticed the Paypal exchange rate so i just paid using my debit card. The money taken is more than on the checkout when purchased ( i guess exchange rate) but also i have been charged by my bank £1.50 per transaction, is that all normal?. May just stick to Paypal in future.

Yes, your bank will charge currency conversion and transaction fees when buying in other currencies.

I use a Santander Zero credit card for foreign purchases. Good exchange rate and no fees.

Paypal rate is generally pretty crap IME, but I'm used to shifting a lot of currency at commercial rates, it's probably OK compared to tourist rates.

iirc the rate my bank provided was 1.19 euro but charged me £1.50 per transaction so Paypal i think was 1.17/18 euro so probably better sticking with that?.
